Lieutenant Junior Grade Güngör Durmuş
Lieutenant Junior Grade Güngör Durmuş served as a team commander within the Turkish Naval Forces’ Underwater Defence Group Command. On July 3, 1998, during a training exercise in Istanbul, he identified that the live-fire exercise involving M-16 rifles posed a safety hazard and ordered the cessation of firing. However, due to the accidental discharge of a firearm by a non-commissioned officer, he was fatally wounded. In his honor, the logistic support vessel TCG YZB. GÜNGÖR DURMUŞ (A-574) was named after him.
Project Management and Multinational Mission Participation
The main contractor of the Logistic Support Ship Project is STM (Savunma Teknolojileri Mühendislik ve Ticaret A.Ş.). STM assumed full responsibility for program management, procurement, assembly, outfitting, system integration, trials and training, logistic support, and commissioning activities throughout the shipbuilding process. Within this framework, the project was implemented as a strategic initiative aimed at enhancing the Turkish Naval Forces’ logistic and operational capabilities.
Upon completion, TCG YZB. GÜNGÖR DURMUŞ (A-574) was commissioned into the Turkish Naval Forces and has since been actively involved in international missions. The vessel contributes to NATO’s maritime operations through its participation under the command of Standing NATO Mine Countermeasures Group 2 (SNMCMG-2). Within this context, the ship plays a significant role in both national and international maritime security and cooperation missions.
