Tekirdağ Namık Kemal University (NKÜ)

Tekirdağ Namık Kemal University (NKÜ) is a public university established on 17 March 2006 by Law No. 5467 and headquartered in Tekirdağ. The university is named after the writer and poet Namık Kemal. At the time of its founding, the Faculty of Agriculture, Çorlu Faculty of Engineering, and several vocational schools previously affiliated with Trakya University were incorporated into the university. NKÜ offers academic programs at the undergraduate, master’s and doctoral levels.

History

Tekirdağ Namık Kemal University was officially established in 2006. Through its founding law, it integrated existing academic units previously under Trakya University, including the Faculty of Agriculture, Çorlu Faculty of Engineering, and eleven vocational schools.

The same law also established new units such as the Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Arts and Sciences, Institute of Natural Sciences, Institute of Social Sciences, and Institute of Health Sciences. In subsequent years, additional faculties were added, including the Faculty of Economic and Administrative Sciences, Faculty of Fine Arts Design and Architecture, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, and Faculty of Theology. In 2021, the School of Physical Education and Sports was restructured into the Faculty of Sports Sciences.

Campuses

Tekirdağ Namık Kemal University operates across campuses located in Tekirdağ and its districts. The main campus is the Değirmenaltı Campus. This campus hosts the faculties of Agriculture, Engineering, Medicine, Health Sciences, Fine Arts Design and Architecture, and Sports Sciences. Other campuses include Çorlu (Engineering), Hayrabolu and Malkara (Agriculture and Food), Şarköy and Marmara Ereğlisi (Tourism and Services).

The university’s student body comprises students enrolled in undergraduate, associate and postgraduate programs. According to the 2020 Administrative Activity Report, the total number of students was recorded as 28,746.

Departments

Tekirdağ Namık Kemal University offers undergraduate and associate degree programs through its faculties and vocational schools. Undergraduate programs include Computer Engineering, Agricultural Engineering, Medicine, Law, Business Administration, Architecture, German Language and Literature, and Nursing. Associate degree programs include Culinary Arts, Computer Programming, and Medical Documentation and Secretarial Studies. International Activities

The university participates in student and staff exchange programs such as Erasmus Plus. These programs facilitate mobility for study or teaching at partner higher education institutions abroad. In addition, the university has bilateral cooperation agreements with universities in the United States, Albania, Azerbaijan, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Bulgaria. These agreements include joint projects and exchange programs.

Awards and Achievements

According to URAP (University Ranking by Academic Performance) data, the university has been ranked among public universities established after 2000. It has received awards under the 'Disability-Free University Awards' granted by the Council of Higher Education (YÖK). The university is also included in the global ranking of the GreenMetric (Green University) Index. In addition, it has earned national and international awards in fields such as culinary arts, sports and scientific research.

Student Life

The Değirmenaltı Campus houses a library. The campus and its surroundings feature sports facilities including a sports hall, football fields and a swimming pool. Accommodation options consist of student dormitories and rental housing in the vicinity of the campus. The Değirmenaltı area is one of the main residential zones for students.
