Tosya Kıstısı

Tosya Kıstısı is a traditional necklace unique to the Tosya district of Kastamonu Province in Türkiye, entirely produced by hand. This jewelry item has been officially registered under the geographical indication system and is recognized as a craft product intrinsically linked to the region, both in terms of its technical production characteristics and its cultural context.

Geographical Definition and Boundaries

Tosya Kıstısı must be produced exclusively within the boundaries of Tosya district, Kastamonu Province. All stages of production must occur within these limits. The term “Tosya Kıstısı” and the geographical indication emblem must appear on the product or its packaging; if not, they must be visibly displayed at the production site.

Structure and Technical Features

• Material: Made from 22-karat gold, with some variations incorporating silver as a supporting base.
• Number of Components: Traditional versions typically consist of 33 fish-shaped feet and 34 to 58 kement elements; some master artisans produce pieces with up to 465 components.
• Foot Motif: Fish-shaped, approximately 2 cm in length; it is the primary motif of the necklace.
• Kement Motif: Bow-shaped, about 1 cm in length, and designed to align with the length of the feet.
• Dual-Sided Decoration: Both sides of each component are ornamented with motifs, distinguishing it from other necklaces.
• Pearls: Pearls are strung along the kement elements; connecting rings prevent wear and tear.

Production Process

• 22-karat gold is melted in a crucible.
• The gold is rolled into sheets approximately 6–6.5 microns thick.
• Foot and kement molds are first pressed onto a lead surface, then onto the gold sheet.
• Excess material is trimmed, and components are brushed and polished.
• The interiors are filled using silver solder or powder soldering.
• Components are secured with fine wire and soldered together.
• Holes are drilled to allow connection via jump rings.
• After cleaning and leveling, the components are strung with pearls.
• Final assembly completes the motifs.

Due to the intensive manual labor involved, the production of a single Tosya Kıstısı takes approximately 25 days.

Cultural Context and Heritage Status

Tosya Kıstısı is an integral part of the local dowry tradition. It is customary for every bride to acquire a Kıstısı, which is then passed down from mother to daughter. The majority of women in Tosya wear it. It complements traditional wedding attire and is regarded not merely as an ornament but as a tangible expression of cultural identity.

Monitoring and Control

Monitoring is carried out by a five-member authority established under the coordination of the Tosya Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Inspections occur at least once per year but may also be conducted at any time upon receipt of a complaint.
