A statistical study published by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK) on 24 February 2025, containing marriage and divorce data for the year 2024.

Number of Marriages and Crude Marriage Rate

According to data published by TÜİK, a total of 568,395 couples married in Türkiye in 2024. This figure was 567,011 in 2023. The crude marriage rate, which represents the number of marriages per thousand people, was calculated at 6.65 per thousand.

The province with the highest marriage rate was Adıyaman at 7.76 per thousand, followed by Gaziantep at 7.68 per thousand and Kilis at 7.66 per thousand. The province with the lowest crude marriage rate was Tunceli at 4.01 per thousand, followed by Gümüşhane at 4.30 per thousand and Bayburt at 4.89 per thousand.

Number of Divorces and Crude Divorce Rate

In Türkiye, 187,343 couples divorced in 2024. The crude divorce rate, representing the number of divorces per thousand people, was calculated at 2.19 per thousand.

The province with the highest divorce rate was Antalya at 3.29 per thousand, followed by İzmir at 3.09 per thousand and Karaman at 3.04 per thousand. The province with the lowest crude divorce rate was Hakkari at 0.45 per thousand, followed by Şırnak at 0.55 per thousand, Siirt at 0.60 per thousand and Muş.

Average Age at First Marriage

When examining the average age at first marriage over the years, an increase has been observed in both genders. In 2024, the average age at first marriage was 28.3 for men and 25.8 for women. The average age difference between men and women at first marriage was 2.5 years.

Foreign National Grooms and Brides

Marriages involving foreign nationals have also been analyzed within the total marriage figures. In 2024, the number of foreign grooms was 5,923, accounting for 1.0% of all grooms. The number of foreign brides was 29,115, representing 5.1% of all brides.

When foreign grooms are analyzed by nationality:

• Syrian grooms ranked first at 20.6%
• German grooms ranked second at 19.5%
• Afghan grooms ranked third at 5.7%

When foreign brides are analyzed by nationality:

• Syrian and Uzbek brides formed the largest group at 12.1%
• Moroccan brides ranked second at 8.3%
• Azerbaijani brides ranked third at 7.5%

Duration of Marriage Before Divorce and Child Custody

When divorces are analyzed by duration of marriage, 33.7% of divorces in 2024 occurred within the first five years of marriage. Divorces occurring between the sixth and tenth years of marriage accounted for 21.3%.

The number of children affected by divorce proceedings has also been assessed. In 2024, 186,536 children were granted custody as a result of divorce. Of these, 74.4% were awarded to mothers and 25.6% to fathers.
