UMTAS

UMTAS (Long-Range Anti-Tank Missile System) is a long-range anti-tank missile system developed by Türkiye. Designed and manufactured by ROKETSAN, it stands out as a modern weapons system capable of integration with both land and air platforms. Thanks to its high-precision guidance technology and extended range, the system has the capability to neutralize various targets from safe distances.

Technical Specifications

The key technical characteristics of UMTAS define its operational applications and performance capabilities. The missile weighs approximately 37 kilograms, measures 1.8 meters in length, and has a diameter of 160 millimeters. Its effective range varies between 500 meters and 8 kilometers, depending on the launch platform and firing mode. The guidance system employs an Infrared Imaging Seeker (IIR) technology and is equipped with a tandem HEAT (High-Explosive Anti-Tank) warhead. Firing modes include “fire-and-forget” and “fire-and-update,” providing operators with the ability to neutralize targets from safe distances.

UMTAS can be integrated with helicopters, land platforms, and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). The system has been specifically optimized for use with the T-129 ATAK helicopter and has demonstrated precise target hits from high altitudes during tests with the Bayraktar TB2 and ANKA UAVs.

UMTAS (Roketsan)

Development History

UMTAS was originally designed in 2005 for the T-129 ATAK attack helicopter and has since been developed for integration with both land and air platforms. The system was developed to strengthen Türkiye’s indigenous defense industry capabilities and reduce reliance on foreign systems. Throughout its development, extensive testing and field trials were conducted to validate the system’s effectiveness across different ranges and platforms.

UMTAS-GM (Future Combat System)

UMTAS-GM is an advanced and modernized variant of UMTAS. This system features two main configurations:

Blok-1: Offers options for an Infrared Imaging Seeker (IIR) or a Semi-Active Laser Seeker (SAL). When launched from land platforms, it achieves a range of 1 to 16 kilometers; when launched from helicopters, the range extends to 1 to 20 kilometers.

Blok-2: Provides enhanced guidance and range capabilities, significantly improving the system’s target hit probability and operational flexibility.

One of the most important features of UMTAS-GM is its “shoot-and-scoot” capability. This allows operators to neutralize targets from secure distances, thereby minimizing exposure to enemy threats.
