The ancient city of Aigai, located in the Yunusemre district of Manisa within the Yunt Dağı region place, is one of the Hellenistic period important settlements. This ancient city, dating back to the 8th century BCE, was founded by the Aeolian people. Situated in a mountainous area, Aigai gained significant economic and strategic importance in antiquity due to its position along major trade routes.



Historical and Cultural Significance

Aigai came under the control of the Pergamon Kingdom in the 3rd century BCE and developed into an important commercial and culture center. The ancient city was surrounded by strong walls and preserves significant traces of the social and commercial life of its time. Notably, the agora (marketplace), theater, temples, and water arches reveal the architectural sensibilities of the period.


One of Aigai’s most striking structures is the Ancient Theatre. Built into a rocky slope, this theatre offers a wide panoramic view of a valley. Additionally, the Sanctuary of Demeter, considered one of the largest sacred areas in the city, sheds light on the religious rituals of ancient Greek cities.



Archaeological Discoveries and Structures

Excavations at Aigai Ancient City have demonstrated its importance as a commercial and art hub. The columned streets, temple remains, necropolises, and rock-cut tombs uncovered during excavations provide valuable insights into the social life of the city.


  • Agora (Marketplace): The commercial center of the city, serving as a meeting point for merchants and artisans.
  • Theatre: Expanded during the Roman period, it had a seating capacity of over 3,000 spectators in its final form.
  • Aqueducts: Important structures that transported water to the city center in antiquity.
  • Rock-Cut Tombs: Located in Aigai’s necropolis area, these tombs are believed to have belonged to the elite.

Touristic and Recreational Areas

Aigai Ancient City offers an appealing discovery route for history and nature enthusiasts. Walking trails within the ancient city enable visitors to engage closely with its historical remains. In addition, the Yuntdağı Plateau located in the close vicinity, with its clean air and unspoiled natural landscape, serves as a suitable resting area for both domestic and foreign tourists.


Access

Aigai is located approximately 49 kilometers from the center of Manisa and falls within the boundaries of Köseler Village in the Yunusemre district. It can be easily reached by private vehicle, and tourist tours departing from Manisa like are also available.
