Arap Baba Türbesi is a sacred pilgrimage site located in the historic district of Harput, approximately 5 km from the center of Elazığ. It is situated in the lower level of the Arap Baba Mosque, which is part of the same architectural complex, and is recognized as one of Elazığ’s cultural heritage sites due to both its architectural features and its spiritual role in local beliefs.
The Arap Baba Türbesi is dated to the Seljuk period. It is located in the lower level of the Arap Baba Mosque, which was constructed on a rocky terrain. The mosque has a square plan with a dome, and its minaret is partially ruined. Inside the türbe is a wooden chest believed to contain the remains of Arap Baba. It is widely believed that despite the passage of centuries, the body has remained incorrupt, a phenomenon regarded in the region as a miracle. The türbe has become a central site for both religious and cultural visits and has evolved into an essential component of traditional folk beliefs.

Arap Baba Türbesi (Culture Portal)
The legend associated with the türbe holds a significant place in the folk culture of Harput. According to the tale, the region of Harput and its surroundings once endured a prolonged drought that brought great hardship to the people. During this time, a woman named Selvi, who lived near the Alaca Mosque, had a dream in which she was told that rain would only come if the head of Arap Baba were severed and thrown into a stream. After experiencing the same dream three nights in a row, Selvi informed the local people, and at their insistence, the türbe was opened, the head was cut off, and thrown into the stream. Immediately afterward, rain began to fall—but it turned into a devastating flood. A new dream then revealed that the head must be restored to its body. Once the head was reattached, the flood ceased. It is said that shortly after this event, Selvi fell ill and died. This legend, passed down orally from generation to generation, is a vital example of regional folk culture and occupies a critical place in the spiritual worldview of the local population. Visitors pray to Arap Baba, seeking his intercession and placing their faith in his spiritual power.
