History of Beştaş

The origins of Beştaş cannot be definitively traced to a single complete, but it is known to have been played for centuries across various regions of Anatolia and Central Asia. Archaeological findings and historical sources indicate that similar stone games were also played in different versions among ancient Greek, Roman, and Asian societies.

Similar stone games played by Central Asian Turkish communities are regarded as part of their cultural heritage. Ottoman-era records also mention games similar to Beştaş being played among people common. Known by various names in different regions of Türkiye, the game continues to be popular among children, especially in rural areas.

Rules and Gameplay

Beştaş is typically played with five small stones. Players take turns performing designated movements to progress through the game. The basic rules are as follows:

  1. Stone Selection: Players choose five smooth stones. It is important that the stones can be easily grasped.
  2. Start: The player scatters all five stones on the ground and selects one to toss into the air.
  3. First Stage: Without letting the tossed stone fall to the ground, the player picks up one other stone from the ground and catches the airborne stone.
  4. Second Stage: This process continues with each round, collecting more stones. In later stages, additional tasks are introduced, such as holding the stones with the back of the hand or performing specific movements.
  5. Completion: The player successfully completes the game when all stages are performed without error.

The player who makes a mistake during a turn loses their turn and passes to the next player. The primary objective of the game is to complete all stages in the most efficient and error-free manner possible.

Cultural and Social Significance

Beştaş is not merely a children’s game; it is also viewed as a social interaction tool. Historically, it has been part of street play culture and recognized as an activity that strengthens social bonds among children. Especially in villages and neighborhood cultures, Beştaş, played in groups by children, fosters communication skills while creating a joyful competition environment.

As an example of traditional street games, Beştaş requires more physical activity compared to modern modern digital games and allows children to spend time immersed in nature. Moreover, through intergenerational transmission, grandparents teach Beştaş to their grandchildren, ensuring cultural continuity.

Pedagogical and Developmental Benefits

From an educational science perspective, the effects of Beştaş on children are diverse:

  1. Hand-Eye Coordination: The actions of catching the airborne stone while picking up another stone strengthen children’s motor skills.
  2. Attention and Focus: Players must remain attentive and collect stones in a specific sequence throughout each stage.
  3. Memory Development: Remembering the game’s stages and performing movements in order supports memory and cognitive abilities.
  4. Strategy Development: Players develop strategic thinking by determining the order of stone collection and the most effective methods.
  5. Social Skills: Group play encourages cooperation, turn-taking, and team spirit.

Beştaş, recognized as one of the recommended traditional games for elementary-aged children, is an important tool in today’s world of rising digital dependency, supporting both physical and mental development.

Beştaş and Modern Game Culture

Today, with technological advancements, traditional games have largely been replaced by digital games. However, educators and psychologists emphasize the positive developmental impacts of traditional games. The use of Beştaş in schools and rehabilitation centers is being encouraged.

In some educational programs, Beştaş is recommended as an exercise tool for children with attention deficits. Additionally, various academic studies have been conducted advocating for greater inclusion of traditional games in curricula.

Beştaş is an integral part of Anatolian and Central Asian culture, with a deep-rooted history passed down through generations. Thanks to its simple rules, it helps children learn and develop while having fun. Today, various projects are being developed and promoted by educators to prevent the disappearance of traditional games.

The importance of Beştaş extends beyond being a mere entertainment tool; it also carries significant value in preserving cultural heritage. Therefore, integrating such traditional games into modern educational systems and reintroducing them among children is importance supply.
