Games in the Series

1. BioShock (2007)

The game, developed by Irrational Games and published by 2K Games, was released on 21 August 2007 and is available on PC, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, macOS, iOS, and Nintendo Switch.

Story

The game begins in 1960 with the protagonist Jack surviving a plane crash over the Atlantic Ocean. After the crash, Jack discovers a lighthouse in the middle of the ocean. This lighthouse serves as an entrance to Rapture, an underwater city. Designed by Andrew Ryan as a utopia where science and art could flourish freely, Rapture has since descended into ruin.

City has been overrun by Splicers—individuals enhanced through genetic modification technologies—and plunged into anarchy. As Jack struggles to survive in the city, he is guided by a mysterious character named Atlas. As the story unfolds, Jack uncovers the true face of Andrew Ryan and a profound secret about his own identity. One of the game’s most unforgettable moments is the manipulative event structure revealed through the phrase “Would you kindly?”

Gameplay Mechanics

• Players combat enemies using both firearms and genetic modifications (Plasmids).

• Plasmids grant players supernatural abilities such as fire projection, electricity manipulation, and telekinesis.

• Little Sister and Big Daddy dynamic: Players progress by either defeating Big Daddies who protect Little Sisters or interacting with them through alternative paths.

• Players must make moral choices regarding whether to rescue Little Sister characters or harvest them for ADAM (genetic material).

2. BioShock 2 (2010)

The game, developed by 2K Marin and published by 2K Games, was released on 9 February 2010 and is available on PC, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, macOS, and Nintendo Switch.

Story

BioShock 2 takes place eight years after the first game and casts players as Subject Delta, a Big Daddy who fights against a regime led by Dr. Sofia Lamb, Rapture’s new ruler.

Dr. Lamb seeks to establish a collectivist system in Rapture, replacing individualism. The Little Sisters are raised as “Messengers of the Future,” central to her philosophy. Subject Delta wages a battle to rescue his kidnapped Little Sister, Eleanor.

Gameplay Mechanics

• Players wield enhanced weapons and Plasmids as a Big Daddy.

• The Dual-Wielding system allows simultaneous use of a weapon and a Plasmid.

• A multiplayer mode has been added, depicting events during Rapture’s decline.

3. BioShock Infinite (2013)

The game, developed by Irrational Games and published by 2K Games, was released on 26 March 2013 and is available on PC, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, macOS, and Nintendo Switch.

Story

The third entry in the series diverges from its predecessors by setting the story in 1912, in Columbia, a floating city in the sky rather than Rapture. The player assumes the role of Booker DeWitt, a former Pinkerton agent who must rescue a mysterious girl named Elizabeth from Columbia to settle his debts.

Columbia is ruled by Father Comstock, an extremist nationalist and theocratic version of USA. The city is a dystopia where American ideals have been taken to extremes, marked by racism and class conflict. Later sections of the game explore complex themes such as parallel universes and time travel.

Gameplay Mechanics

• The Skyhook mechanic enables combat along aerial pathways.

• New supernatural abilities called Vigors replace the Plasmids from Rapture.

• Elizabeth is a character controlled by artificial intelligence who assists the player.

• The ability to transition between different time periods and dimensions offers players a unique experience.
