EXPO 2016 Antalya Tower is a 96 metre high observation structure built as part of the EXPO 2016 International Agriculture Fair held in Antalya city, Türkiye in 2016. The tower is located at one of the central points of the fairground and provides visitors with a bird’s-eye view of the event area. Its design was developed by drawing inspiration from the city’s cultural and natural motifs through modern architectural approaches. The structure was planned as one of the main elements integrating with the agriculture and sustainability themes exhibited at the fair.
An architectural design competition for the EXPO 2016 Antalya Tower was held with national and international participation to determine the tower’s design. Numerous proposals reflecting diverse design philosophies were submitted and evaluated by the jury. The winning design, prepared by Serdar Kızıltaş and Zeynep Melike Atay, was inspired by Antalya’s natural and cultural symbols: palm trees and the historical Three Gates motif. The design was developed in accordance with international standards for modern observation towers and positioned at the central point of the fairground. The awards for the winning young architects were presented by the Governor and Acting Chair of the EXPO 2016 Antalya Agency Board of Directors Sebahattin Öztürk.

The winning proposal was planned as a 96 metre high observation tower with multiple platforms offering visitors views from different elevations. Access to the platforms is provided through elevator and staircase systems. The silhouette and form of the structure were implemented to achieve visual harmony with other buildings in the fairground and the surrounding open space arrangements. The tower has assumed a central function within the fairground as one of the iconic structures of EXPO 2016 Antalya and is intended to become a long-term attraction for the city.
The design of the EXPO 2016 Antalya Tower follows the structural approach of modern observation towers and stands out as an iconic structure of the fairground due to its height and silhouette. The design incorporates formal details inspired by Antalya’s natural and cultural elements; the upper sections of the structure feature lines reminiscent of palm trees and the city’s historical Three Gates motif. This approach not only gives the tower an aesthetic appearance but also ensures its integration with local identity.
The architectural layout of the structure is organized to ensure the safe and comfortable observation of the area by visitors. The tower features multiple-level observation platforms with access provided via elevator and staircase systems. Materials and facade details used in the structure were selected to meet both durability requirements and modern architectural aesthetic criteria. The tower is positioned to achieve visual harmony with the surrounding fairground and is planned as part of a cohesive composition with the adjacent open space arrangements.
The foundation and main structure of the EXPO 2016 Antalya Tower were constructed using high-strength concrete and steel. The tower stands 96 metres tall with a foundation diameter of 16 metres and a shaft diameter of 4 metres. The foundation used C40/50 concrete class, S4 consistency, and aggregates of 16 mm maximum size (Dmax 22 mm). The tower shaft was poured using C50/60 concrete class with S4 and S5 consistencies and aggregates of 11 mm, 16 mm and 22 mm maximum size (Dmax).【1】 During construction using the incremental casting method and slipform system, each pouring stage was carried out in accordance with the concrete setting time to ensure strength and workability.

Reinforcement bars were meticulously placed to ensure structural stability of the tower shaft. Cross and vertical reinforcement within the foundation and shaft provided protection against wind and seismic forces. Prefabricated platform elements and specialized support systems were employed during construction, with all technical applications carried out in compliance with engineering standards. Construction of the tower was completed in approximately six months according to the planned schedule.
The EXPO 2016 Antalya Tower was planned as part of the sustainability approach of EXPO 2016 Antalya. The tower and its surrounding landscape arrangements were designed with emphasis on green space integration and minimization of environmental impacts. Infrastructure systems used throughout the fairground were implemented in accordance with energy efficiency and water management principles, thereby reducing environmental impacts during the event. As the iconic structure of the site, the tower fulfils both visual coherence and sustainability objectives.
Organizationally, the tower contributes to the management of visitor flow. Wayfinding systems and access routes within the fairground facilitate access to the tower and optimize overall site usage. Furthermore, the tower and its surroundings are being considered for long-term use as an event and observation space following the fair. This planning enhances the organizational efficiency of the Expo area and ensures the structure acquires a lasting cultural and social function.
