Free Republic of Liberland

Free Republic of Liberland (English: Free Republic of Liberland) is a micronation declared on 13 April 2015 by Czech politician Vít Jedlička, whose international legal status remains controversial. Liberland claims territory on a disputed, unclaimed strip of land between Croatia and Serbia, located along the banks of the Danube River, with an area of approximately 7 km².

The declaration of Liberland is based on the border dispute between Croatia and Serbia. After the dissolution of Yugoslavia in 1991, the status of certain areas along the western bank of the Danube River remained unresolved. Croatia asserts that these territories do not belong to its sovereign land, while Serbia has not made any claim over them. This ambiguity has led to the area being considered terra nullius—unclaimed land.

On 13 April 2015, Czech politician and activist Vít Jedlička announced the founding of Liberland on this unclaimed territory. Jedlička declared that Liberland would be a libertarian state founded on principles of individual liberty, low taxation, and minimal state intervention.

Liberland is situated on the western bank of the Danube River, within the disputed area between Croatia and Serbia. With an area of approximately 7 km², it is considered one of the smallest claimed states in the world. However, Croatia has rejected Liberland’s claim, asserting that the territory belongs to its sovereign territory.

Liberland is not officially recognized by the international community and is not a member of the United Nations. The Croatian government maintains control over the territory and restricts access to Liberland. Croatian security forces typically deport individuals attempting to visit Liberland.

Jedlička and the Liberland administration have pursued various diplomatic initiatives and established contacts with several states in an effort to gain recognition, but have not secured any formal recognition.

The Liberland administration accepts citizenship applications via the internet, with reports indicating that over half a million applications have been submitted. According to its proposed constitution, individual liberties are prioritized, taxation is based on a voluntary basis, and state intervention is kept to a minimum. Although Liberland has issued passports, these documents have no official validity under international law.

Liberland embraces cryptocurrency units and blockchain technologies, aiming to build its economy around digital assets and other virtual holdings. In addition, it seeks to offer an attractive tax regime for private investors and entrepreneurs. However, limited physical access to the territory and the absence of international recognition have rendered Liberland’s future uncertain.

Liberland can be described as a micronation engaged in a struggle for international legal recognition. Despite having its own constitution and citizenship program, it lacks effective control over its territory and exists only as a symbolic state. Due to Croatia’s strict control over the region, Liberland’s future status remains uncertain.
