Historical Gasworks Factory is a significant industrial structure located on Liman Street in the Umurbey Neighborhood of the Konak District in İzmir, Türkiye. It operated from the 19th century until the end of the 20th century. Spread over an area of approximately 23 dunams, the facility long supplied the city’s lighting needs but gradually lost its function due to technological and social changes. Today, following restoration efforts, it has been reconfigured as a cultural and events center and has become one of İzmir’s most iconic symbolic spaces.

History

The idea of producing gas in İzmir was first introduced by French investors, but the initiative was interrupted following the death of entrepreneur André Marchais. Subsequently, following an application by British journalist A. Edwards, a license was granted on 1 November 1859 to establish a gasworks in the city and operate it for 40 years. The facility was constructed in the Alsancak Darağacı area, known for its windy structure, to prevent the dispersion of coal dust. Construction, delayed by various political and diplomatic reasons, began only in 1862, and production commenced in 1867.

The factory’s construction was carried out by “Lanloux and Sons” based in Glasgow, with equipment sourced from England and Germany. Initially, the gas distribution network served areas with high concentrations of foreigners, later extending to Karşıyaka, Bornova, and Turkish neighborhoods. Street lighting in the city began in 1864, and by 1902 the lighting system had become widespread. As electricity use increased, the role of gas in the city became limited to domestic cooking. Between 1907 and 1913, technical upgrades were implemented at the facility.

During the Republican era, the factory continued operations until 1935, when foreign concessions were abolished and the facility was transferred to the İzmir Municipality. After repairs, it was returned to service. It underwent comprehensive maintenance in 1940 and, following various functional changes, completed its economic life in 1994. The facility was closed in the same year by a decision of the İzmir Metropolitan Municipality, and some of its equipment was transferred to the Rahmi M. Koç Museum of Industry in 1995. In the late 1990s, the site was used as a repair and waiting area for municipal buses, during which time the buildings suffered severe deterioration.

On 8 January 1998, the site, along with 53 other industrial structures in the region, was placed under protection by the abolished İzmir No.1 Cultural and Natural Heritage Protection Board. In 2001, following the İzmir Port Area Urban Design Competition and subsequent planning efforts, the goal was set to preserve and refunction the area holistically. In 2003, projects were prepared in line with the proposal to convert the site into a cultural center; restoration began in 2005 and was completed in 2008. The site opened to the public in 2009 under the name “Historical Gasworks Factory Cultural Center.”

Architectural and Functional Transformation

As part of the restoration process, all structures outside the 2,850 square meter protected buildings were demolished. Industrial elements such as the foundry, machine room, administration building, meter room, workshops, water tank, chimney, and workers’ housing were preserved in situ. The flat and shell furnaces and two gasometers (with capacities of 15,000 m³ and 4,000 m³) were demolished. However, one of the gasometers is represented on-site by its ground footprint, while the other is represented by a model. The 46.3-meter-high chimney was reinforced and integrated into the structure.

Through functional adaptations, the foundry was converted into a café, the machine room into a reading room, the workshop building into an exhibition and event space, and the water tank into a service unit. Environmental improvements created open-air viewing areas, plazas, ornamental ponds, and green spaces.

Current Use

The Historical Gasworks Factory now functions as an active center in İzmir’s cultural life. It hosts a variety of events including open-air concerts, theater performances, poetry readings, exhibitions, film screenings, and workshops. It is also used as a venue for private events such as receptions, promotional meetings, cocktail parties, weddings, and engagements. As one of the exemplary cases of İzmir’s industrial heritage, it serves as a model for preserving urban cultural memory and opening it to public use.
