Linus Benedict Torvalds is a software engineer born on 28 December 1969 in Helsinki, Finland.
Torvalds’ interest in computers began at an early age. While studying at the University of Helsinki, he decided to write his own operating system kernel due to dissatisfaction with the limitations of existing operating systems at the time. He continues to play a leading role in the technical direction of the project as the current maintainer of the Linux kernel.
He is best known for initiating and developing the Linux operating system kernel, which is now widely used around the world. In 1991 he announced the first version of this kernel and made its source code freely available over the internet. The Linux kernel has a Unix-like structure but was written from scratch by Torvalds. He reviews and approves new code contributions to the project. He also developed the distributed version control system Git, which has become a critical tool for facilitating team collaboration, especially in large software projects.
He is one of the most influential figures in the open source software movement. Thanks to the open source model, security vulnerabilities and bugs are quickly identified and fixed by the community, and new features can be added. This collaborative development model has created a paradigm shift in the software industry.
Linus Torvalds’ development of Linux has had a profound impact on information technology. Linux is used in a wide range of devices, from servers and supercomputers to smartphones (Android) and embedded systems. He has led the widespread adoption of the open source philosophy and introduced a new model to software development processes.
