Tokatlı Canyon (Safranbolu)

Tokatlı Canyon is located within the boundaries of the Safranbolu district of Karabük Province. The canyon was formed through thousands of years of natural erosion of limestone layers along the Hızar Creek. It is the most striking among the canyons in Safranbolu. One end of the canyon extends to Tokatlı Village while the other reaches Gümüş Neighborhood in the Eski Çarşı area of Safranbolu.

Physical Features and Walking Trail

A approximately 9-kilometer walking trail runs along the creek within Tokatlı Canyon. This trail is used for nature walking and trekking activities. Various natural elements and animal species can be observed along the canyon. Proposals have been developed for integrated transportation projects and areas designed to serve visitors.

Incekaya Aqueduct

One of the most important structures within the canyon is the Incekaya Aqueduct, commissioned by İzzet Mehmet Paşa, a Grand Vizier of the Ottoman Empire. Located 7.5 kilometers from the district center, the aqueduct is 116 meters long, consists of six arches, and has a width ranging between 110 and 220 centimeters. It was constructed to transport water from its source to Safranbolu and is notable for its architectural features.

Crystal Glass Terrace

The Crystal Terrace built over Tokatlı Canyon is a structure situated 80 meters above ground and 11 meters wide. The terrace consists of three sections made of glass, each 3 centimeters thick, and has a load capacity of 75 tons. Supported by perforated panels each capable of bearing 750 kilograms, the structure covers a total area of 100 square meters and is designed to accommodate up to 30 visitors simultaneously.

Natural Life and Activities

Tokatlı Canyon is a natural habitat for various animal species including squirrels, horses, and geese. In addition to nature walks, sporting activities such as paintball and horseback riding can be enjoyed in the surrounding area. In this regard, Tokatlı Canyon serves as a point of attraction that reflects both the historical fabric and natural beauty of Safranbolu.
