Exceeding the 2600 Elo Threshold

Erdoğmuş became the youngest player ever to surpass the 2600 Elo rating on the FIDE list, achieving this milestone at the age of 13. He now shares this age-based statistical group with previous young achievers such as John Burke, Wei Yi, Praggnanandhaa, Abhimanyu Mishra, Nihal Sarin and Wesley So.

Sharjah Masters International Chess Championship

Erdoğmuş participated in the 7th Sharjah Masters International Chess Championship held in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates. During the tournament, he faced strong Grandmasters. He secured victories with the black pieces against Indian Grandmasters S. P. Sethuraman and Mittal Aditya. In the final round, he drew with Vladimir Fedoseev, ranked 36th in the world, also playing with black pieces. At the end of the tournament, he gained +11.4 Elo points. His live rating rose to 2569 Elo, surpassing Judit Polgar’s 2555 Elo achieved at age 13.

World Rapid and Blitz Chess Championship

Doha Event and Turkish Team

The World Rapid and Blitz Chess Championship, held in Doha, Qatar, featured rapid chess events from 26 to 28 December and blitz chess events from 29 to 30 December. In the open category, Türkiye was represented by Yağız Kaan Erdoğmuş, Ediz Gürel, Mustafa Yılmaz, Emre Can, Vahap Şanal and Cem Kaan Gökercan. In the women’s category, Ekaterina Atalık and Gülenay Aydın participated.

During this event, Erdoğmuş defeated Nihal Sarin, ranked 32nd in the world. After this victory, he reached the same score as Magnus Carlsen in the tournament standings.

Exceeding the 2700 Elo Threshold

Yağız Kaan Erdoğmuş surpassed the 2700 Elo threshold following his results at the Nesillerin Çatışması III tournament organized by the Monaco Chess Federation, marking a historic milestone in chess. During the tournament, Erdoğmuş faced former world champion Veselin Topalov and, through his performance, achieved a score of 4–1, raising his Elo rating above 2700.

With this achievement, Erdoğmuş, at age 14, became the youngest Grandmaster in chess history to reach the 2700 Elo level. Previously, this record belonged to Wei Yi, who crossed the threshold at age 15. Thus, Erdoğmuş has signed an achievement that is not only nationally significant but also historically notable in international chess.


The 2700 Elo level, occupied by elite players worldwide, is regarded as one of the highest indicators of performance. Previously, Magnus Carlsen, Alireza Firouzja and Dommaraju Gukesh reached this level at age 16. Erdoğmuş surpassing this threshold at an earlier age enhances the historical significance of his accomplishment.


This result has been recorded as the highest Elo rating ever achieved in Turkish chess history, reinforcing Erdoğmuş’s position in the nation’s chess legacy. The achievement is considered a major development enhancing Türkiye’s representation on the international chess stage.


In a congratulatory message published by Osman Aşkın Bak, it was emphasized that Erdoğmuş’s achievement carries historic significance and that the player represents Turkish chess at the highest level.

2026 TePe Sigeman & Co Chess Tournament

The 2026 TePe Sigeman & Co Chess Tournament, held from 1 to 7 May 2026 at the Elite Plaza Hotel in Malmö, Sweden, is a prestigious classical chess event in Yağız Kaan Erdoğmuş’s career. As a Grandmaster (GM), Erdoğmuş participated in the eight-player elite field and finished the tournament in fourth place with 4 points.

Tournament Format and Starting Conditions

The tournament featured an eight-player single round-robin format, with classical time controls. The time control was set at 90 minutes for the first 40 moves, plus an additional 30 minutes for the rest of the game, with a 30-second increment per move starting from move one.


As the youngest chess player to surpass the 2700 Elo rating threshold as of April 2026, 14-year-old Yağız Kaan Erdoğmuş entered the tournament with a starting rating of 2708 Elo.

Progression and Key Matches During the Tournament

Yağız Kaan Erdoğmuş concluded the seven-round tournament with two wins, four draws and one loss.

Third Round Match

In the third round, Erdoğmuş faced Chinese Grandmaster Zhu Jiner and secured his first win of the tournament. Playing with the black pieces, Erdoğmuş faced Zhu’s opening moves of 1. Nf3, 2. e3 and 3. b3. Despite being Black, he took control of the board with strong and natural moves. On move 34, Zhu Jiner, with only two seconds left on his clock, played the blunder 34. Ne3?, allowing Erdoğmuş to win the queen with a knight fork from c3. Following this, Zhu resigned and Erdoğmuş won the game.


Yağız Kaan Erdoğmuş (TSF)

Following this victory, Erdoğmuş’s live rating reached 2711.9, elevating him to 29th place in the world rankings. With this win, he joined Magnus Carlsen, Nodirbek Abdusattorov, Andy Woodward and Arjun Erigaisi as one of the five players sharing the lead after round three.

Sixth Round Match

In the sixth round, Erdoğmuş played with the white pieces against Nodirbek Abdusattorov, ranked fourth in the world. This challenging encounter ended in a draw.

Final Round: Match Against Magnus Carlsen

In the final round, played on Thursday, 7 May 2026 at 13:00, Yağız Kaan Erdoğmuş faced Magnus Carlsen, the world number one and Norwegian Grandmaster. Playing with the black pieces, Erdoğmuş suffered his first and only loss of the tournament.

After the game, Magnus Carlsen provided a technical assessment of Yağız Kaan Erdoğmuş’s play. Carlsen noted that he sensed Erdoğmuş was under considerable tension during the game. He admitted he could not fully anticipate Erdoğmuş’s opening choices and opted for a safe path. Carlsen stated that his strategy was to steer young players into the endgame, which he considered a logical approach. Carlsen emphasized that Erdoğmuş demonstrated excellent endgame technique and that there was only one path to draw, but Erdoğmuş failed to find it.

Tournament Result and Final Standings

After seven rounds, Yağız Kaan Erdoğmuş finished the tournament with a total of 4 points. Tied with Nodirbek Abdusattorov, Erdoğmuş placed fourth overall based on tiebreak criteria. The tournament champion was Magnus Carlsen, who scored 5 points and defeated Arjun Erigaisi in tiebreak matches to claim the title.
