Why Was Afghanistan’s Struggle for Freedom Important?

When Emamullah Khan ascended the throne in 1919 after his father, his country was not yet fully independent. At that time, Britain held considerable influence over Afghanistan, as it did over many other nations. The young king immediately proclaimed to the world that his country must achieve complete independence. Emamullah Khan launched a war of independence against the British, uniting his people and demonstrating extraordinary courage. After a series of battles and negotiations, Afghanistan gained full independence in 1919. Following this victory, the people bestowed upon him the title Gazi, meaning “warrior” and “victor.”

How Did the Great Friendship with Atatürk Begin?

Emamullah Khan greatly admired the newly established Republic of Türkiye and its leader, Gazi Mustafa Kemal Atatürk. In 1928, he became the first foreign head of state to visit Türkiye. Upon arriving in Ankara, he was warmly welcomed by Atatürk with great affection and ceremony. When the two leaders met, they placed deep trust in each other and addressed one another as “my brother.” Emamullah Khan examined Ankara’s new buildings, schools, and factories with great admiration. Even as he departed, he expressed his love for the Turkish people with the words: “The Turks are our pupils.”

What Did He Do for Schools and a New Future?

One of King Emamullah’s greatest ambitions was to ensure that children and youth received the best possible education. Upon returning to his country, he opened bright new schools and made education compulsory for all. He placed special emphasis on girls’ education and established dedicated high schools for them. He believed so strongly in the power of education that he sent many young Afghans to Türkiye and Europe for advanced studies. In fact, in 1928 he entrusted a group of Afghan girls to his friend Atatürk’s country so they could become doctors and nurses. He knew that an educated generation would carry Afghanistan to far greater heights.

Where Did His Dreams and Farewell End?

Because Emamullah Khan sought rapid changes in his country, some groups could not adapt to this pace and opposed him. Certain individuals resistant to reform caused unrest within the country. As a peace-loving king, Emamullah Khan did not wish to see a civil war erupt or his people suffer. Due to these tragic events, he abdicated the throne in 1929 and was forced to leave the country with his family. However, the seeds of education and freedom he planted have remained a beacon of hope throughout Afghanistan’s history. When he died in 1960, in accordance with his will, he was brought back to his beloved country and buried in the city of Celalabad.
