Professor Dr. Ali Nesin is an academic renowned in Türkiye for his contributions to mathematics and his educational initiatives. He was born in Istanbul in 1956. After completing his primary and secondary education in Türkiye, he pursued his undergraduate studies in mathematics at Yale University in the United States. He continued his graduate and doctoral studies at Paris VII University. Following his doctorate, he conducted research at internationally prestigious institutions such as the University of California (UC Berkeley) and the University of Notre Dame.
After returning to Türkiye, he founded the Department of Mathematics at Istanbul Bilgi University and served as its head for many years. During this period, he designed undergraduate and graduate-level educational programs and contributed significantly to the development of numerous young academics.
His academic work primarily focuses on group theory, algebraic topology, homotopy theory, and the structures of infinite groups. He has also taught and written extensively on mathematical logic, set theory, and number systems. He particularly embraced an educational philosophy that emphasizes “generating thought” rather than merely “transmitting data.” He has published numerous articles in international journals both abroad and in Türkiye.
Ali Nesin has authored many books at both scientific and popular levels. Written in accessible language, these books cater to both students and general readers interested in mathematics. His major works include:
In these works, he argues that mathematics is not merely a technical field but also a discipline that trains thought and enhances human understanding.
Established in 2007 in the village of Şirince near İzmir, the Nesin Mathematics Village is a concrete initiative through which Ali Nesin connects his academic expertise with society via an alternative educational model. The village hosts summer and winter programs open to participants of all ages. High school students, university students, teachers, and academics come together in this environment. Courses are based on voluntary participation, with no exams or diploma system. The learning process is shaped by individual interest and engagement.
In addition to mathematics, programs at the village also include courses in logic, philosophy, history of science, and creative thinking. Participants experience a learning environment that provides both academic and social support.
Over time, new structures have been added to the Mathematics Village, including the Philosophy Village, the Art Village, and the Theatre Village, creating a multidisciplinary learning space grounded in free thought.
In 2018, Ali Nesin was honored with the Leelavati Prize at the International Congress of Mathematicians held in India. This prestigious award is given to individuals or institutions that significantly contribute to public understanding and appreciation of mathematics. Ali Nesin became the first person from Türkiye to receive this award. The selection committee specifically recognized his efforts to bring mathematics to broad segments of society through the Mathematics Village.
Ali Nesin has also been among the contributors to the journal Matematik Dünyası, where he aimed to reach wide audiences through popular scientific writings. In his articles, he has explored themes such as the nature of mathematics, its relationship with human reason, the necessity of abstract thinking, and the importance of critical thought.
Nesin believes that access to knowledge should not be limited to educational institutions alone. He has continued producing intellectual content through written and visual media. In his writings, he places equal emphasis on fostering critical thinking through questions and discussions, not merely on instruction.
