Ara Güler, recognized nationally and internationally as one of the leading figures of 20th century photography, is particularly known for his documentation of the social and cultural fabric of Istanbul. Positioning photography not merely as an art form but as a tool for historical documentation, Güler has become one of the most influential figures in the history of Turkish photography through his contributions to the creation of visual memory.
Ara Güler was born on 16 August 1928 in the Beyoğlu district of Istanbul. He came from an Armenian family; his father was a pharmacist who completed his education in Austria. His interest in art emerged in childhood, particularly his fascination with cinema and theater, which laid the foundation for his later career in visual storytelling. After completing his education at Getronagan Armenian High School in Istanbul, he enrolled at Istanbul University Faculty of Economics but soon shifted toward journalism, marking the beginning of his professional life in this field.
Ara Güler’s deep engagement with art and intellectual heritage transformed him into more than just a photographer; he became a thoughtful narrator, a historical observer and a cultural archivist. He earned the title “The Eye of Istanbul” through his black-and-white images that documented the historical texture of the city, its people, and everyday life. The streets, tradespeople, children, boats and mosques captured in his photographs serve as documents of Turkey’s cultural transitions during its modernization.

Güler began his career in journalism and photography in the 1950s as a reporter for the newspaper Yeni İstanbul. Under the guidance of Ahmet İhsan Tokgöz, one of the most prominent journalists of the era, he turned toward photojournalism. He later worked for the newspaper Hürriyet, where he emphasized the photo-reportage genre. In 1958 he was appointed as the Middle East photo correspondent for Time-Life magazine and subsequently began collaborating with international publications such as Paris Match, Stern and the Sunday Times.
In 1961 he was named one of the world’s seven best photographers by the British Journal of Photography Year Book published in England, becoming the first Turkish photographer admitted to the prestigious Magnum Photos agency, which Henri Cartier-Bresson was affiliated with. In 1962 he received the title “Master of Leica” in Germany and was honored by Leica; this distinction was awarded only to a very limited number of photographic artists at the time.
Among the prominent global figures interviewed or photographed by Güler are Bertrand Russell, Winston Churchill, Indira Gandhi, Salvador Dalí, Alfred Hitchcock, Marc Chagall and Pablo Picasso. These portraits attest not only to his skill as a photographer but also to his role as a visual historian.
Güler viewed photography not as an artistic object but as a social documentary tool. Through his vast archive of Istanbul, he created a collection of documents chronicling the city’s modernization processes. The Istanbul captured in his frames is not merely a visual theme but a historical narrative.
