Asım Vasfi Bey, born in Erzurum in 1891, was a politician who held active roles from the First World War through the Republican era. He served as a member of the Teşkilât-ı Mahsûsa and participated in the War of Independence, becoming a deputy for Erzurum in the 1st, 3rd and 4th terms of the Grand National Assembly of Türkiye. He served on various committees in the TBMM and drew attention through legislative proposals and critical reports. His influential reports on party organization within the Republican People’s Party led to changes in local structures. After 1937 he was appointed to public offices, settled in Ankara after 1950, and died in 1966.
Asım Vasfi Bey, born in Erzurum in 1891, was also known by the nickname “Mühürdarzade.” After completing his primary and secondary education at the Erzurum Mülkiye İdadisi in 1908, he entered the commercial sector. He attracted the attention of the Committee of Union and Progress and collaborated with the military supply services. During the First World War, he fought alongside militia forces on the Eastern Front against the Russians as part of the Teşkilât-ı Mahsûsa. After the war he was arrested in Istanbul but escaped from prison with the help of friends. He returned to Ankara, met with Mustafa Kemal Paşa, and was elected as a deputy from Erzurum in 1920, joining the 1st TBMM.
Asım Bey participated in the opening of the Assembly on 23 April 1920 and served on the Economic and Budget Committees. He actively supported efforts on the Western Front against the Greeks. As a member of the Defence of Rights Group, he took a stance against the opposing Second Group. In 1921 he submitted a proposal thanking Nafiz Kotan of Erzurum for donating two aircraft. In 1923 he proposed that import goods should not be subject to customs duties a second time; this proposal was adopted unanimously.
He submitted two important legislative proposals. The first, in 1922, called for the removal of deductions from military personnel salaries. This proposal was accepted by the Assembly. The second, in 1924, proposed seniority bonuses for officers who had not been promoted during the war; this proposal was also adopted unanimously.
After the first term, he continued his political career within the Republican People’s Party. He entered the Assembly as deputy for Erzurum in the 3rd term in 1927 and the 4th term in 1931. He served on the Court of Accounts, Budget and Accounts Committees. In 1931 he inspected the Erzurum organization in person and in his report criticized the aging party leadership for failing to connect with the public. Following this report, which highlighted the inefficiency of the organization, the leadership was replaced. In 1934 he reported his observations on the new leadership to the Party Central Committee based on his inspections in Erzurum.
In 1934, while traveling with Kars Deputy Ömer Kamil Bey, he was attacked by bandits near Refahiye. After this incident, his relations with the CHP Central Committee deteriorated. In 1937 he was appointed Commissioner of the Kars Livestock Exchange, a position he held until 1947. He later served as Director of the Turkish Office and Director of the Erzurum Regional Trade Directorate. His applications for candidacy as a deputy were rejected by the CHP. After 1950 he withdrew from politics and settled in Ankara.
Asım Vasfi Bey died in Ankara on 7 August 1966 and was buried at Cebeci Asri Cemetery. He was married and the father of four children. His name was recorded simply as “Asım” in population registers, but appeared as “Asım Vasfi Bey” in Assembly records.
