Baku Electronics Leads the Way in Green Retailing

Introduction

Baku Electronics, one of Azerbaijan’s largest electronics retailers, has taken notable steps toward improving its environmental footprint. With support from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and the Global Environment Facility (GEF), the company has implemented green technologies to enhance energy efficiency in its operations. These efforts contribute to reducing energy use and greenhouse gas emissions in a country where energy prices are low and awareness of energy-saving measures is still developing.

Founding and Market Role

Baku Electronics was founded in 1994 by two business families: the Nakhjavani and Eromi brothers. Originally from Tabriz, Iran, the families entered the Azerbaijani market shortly after the Soviet Union’s collapse. At the time, the country lacked specialized electronics stores. Starting with the street sale of televisions, the business quickly grew.

Today, Baku Electronics is the leading electronics and home appliances retailer in the Caucasus region, with a market share exceeding 15%. The company expanded its product line over the years to include mobile devices, accessories, household goods, textiles, and sports equipment. It was also the first in Azerbaijan to offer credit-based purchases, introducing a new retail model to the country.

Collaboration with EBRD and GEF

In 2007, Baku Electronics sought support from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) to build new stores that matched their operational and design needs. The EBRD provided funding that enabled the construction of three eco-friendly, multi-brand retail buildings in Baku.

The company collaborated with the Finance and Technology Transfer Centre for Climate Change (FINTECC), a programme financed by the Global Environment Facility (GEF). Through this support, the stores were equipped with advanced building materials, including high-performance coated glass windows with low transmittance. These windows help reduce heat loss, optimize natural lighting, and shield products from ultraviolet radiation.

Environmental Impact and Energy Efficiency

The green building features implemented in Baku Electronics’ stores have led to an estimated annual energy savings of 6,000 megawatt-hours (MWh). These improvements also prevent approximately 2,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions each year, which is equivalent to removing 500 cars from circulation.

In a country like Azerbaijan—where fossil fuels dominate and energy prices are heavily subsidized—energy efficiency initiatives remain limited. However, projects like this contribute to broader awareness and change within the construction and retail sectors.

Role of FINTECC in Climate Technologies

FINTECC supports the adoption of climate-resilient technologies across industries in Azerbaijan and other participating countries. It provides both technical assistance and grant funding for projects that lower greenhouse gas emissions.

As of the latest data, FINTECC projects have helped reduce annual CO₂ emissions by approximately 230,000 tonnes, saved 1.6 million cubic meters of water, and preserved 44,000 tonnes of raw materials. These efforts reflect the increasing global emphasis on sustainable and responsible business practices.
