Burdur Mehmet Akif Ersoy University (MAKÜ)

Burdur Mehmet Akif Ersoy University (MAKÜ) is a public university established by Law No. 5467 dated 17 March 2006. It carries out educational, teaching and research activities in the city of Burdur, located in Türkiye’s Mediterranean Region. The university is particularly recognized as a higher education institution specializing in animal husbandry within the framework of its mission focused on regional development.

The academic roots of the university date back to periods prior to its official establishment in 2006. The first higher education unit in the region was the Burdur Female Teachers School, which began operations in the 1965–1966 academic year. This institution was transformed into a two-year Institute of Education in 1977, affiliated with Akdeniz University in 1982, and renamed the School of Education in 1989. In 1992, it became part of Süleyman Demirel University and adopted the name Burdur Faculty of Education, forming the core of the present university.

Academic development in the region accelerated with the establishment of the Burdur Faculty of Veterinary Medicine under Akdeniz University in 1992. In 2006, following the adoption of the relevant law, faculties and schools previously affiliated with different universities were unified under a single institutional framework, establishing the legal personality of Burdur Mehmet Akif Ersoy University. In 2017, the university was selected by the Council of Higher Education (YÖK) as a pilot institution in the field of “Animal Husbandry” under the “Mission Differentiation and Specialization Program for Regional Development.”

The main campus of the university is the İstiklal Campus, located near the center of Burdur city. This campus houses a large portion of the faculties, institutes, administrative units, the central library, laboratories and social facilities.

In addition to the main campus, academic units operate in various districts of Burdur. The campus in Bucak district hosts faculties and schools focused on technology and business, integrated into the regional industrial structure. The Gölhisar Campus accommodates applied sciences and vocational schools. Furthermore, buildings in districts such as Ağlasun, Altınyayla, Çavdır, Tefenni and Yeşilova host vocational training programs tailored to the local geographic and economic structure.

According to university data, approximately 36,000 students are enrolled: 14,927 in faculties, 3,948 in schools, 2,983 in institutes and 14,047 in vocational schools.^【1】 Admissions are conducted based on scores from the Higher Education Institutions Examination (YKS) organized by the Student Selection and Placement Center (ÖSYM). Additionally, special talent exams are held for departments such as Music Education, Art and Craft Education, and Physical Education and Sports.

Burdur Mehmet Akif Ersoy University offers undergraduate and associate degree programs through its faculties, schools and vocational schools.

Undergraduate programs are delivered across faculties and schools located at the central and district campuses. The Faculty of Education offers programs in Computer and Instructional Technology Education, Science Education, Primary Mathematics Education, English Language Teaching, Preschool Education, Special Education Teaching, Guidance and Psychological Counseling, Classroom Teaching, Social Studies Teaching and Turkish Language Teaching.

The Faculty of Arts and Sciences offers programs in Anthropology, Archaeology, Biology, Geography, Philosophy, English Language and Literature, Spanish Language and Literature, Chemistry, Mathematics, Molecular Biology and Genetics, Nanoscience and Nanotechnology, Sociology, History, Turkish Language and Literature, and Data Science and Analytics. Additionally, this faculty includes a technology-focused program in Precision Agriculture and Agricultural Robotics.

Engineering and architecture education is provided under the umbrella of the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture, Bucak Faculty of Computer and Information Sciences, and Bucak Faculty of Technology. Programs offered include Computer Engineering, Information Systems Engineering, Electrical-Electronics Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Software Engineering, Architecture and Landscape Architecture.

Health-related undergraduate programs are delivered by the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Faculty of Dentistry, Faculty of Health Sciences and Bucak School of Health. These include Emergency Medicine and Disaster Management, Nutrition and Dietetics, Child Development, Midwifery, Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation, Gerontology, Nursing and Health Administration.

The Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences and the Bucak Faculty of Business offer programs in Economics and Finance, Finance and Banking, Public Relations and Advertising, Economics, Business Administration, Public Finance, Political Science and Public Administration, and Social Work.

Applied sciences and schools offer professional undergraduate programs such as Information Systems and Technologies, Customs Management, Accounting and Financial Management, Land Registry and Cadastre, and Management Information Systems. Other undergraduate programs include Gastronomy and Culinary Arts and Tourism Management at the Faculty of Tourism, Visual Communication Design at the Faculty of Art and Design, and Sports Management at the Faculty of Sports Sciences.

Associate degree programs are structured through vocational schools to train qualified mid-level personnel in health, technical, agricultural and social fields. In the health sector, Burdur and Gölhisar Health Services Vocational Schools offer programs in Oral and Dental Health, Operating Room Services, Anesthesia, Child Development, Pharmacy Services, Home Patient Care, Physiotherapy, First Aid and Emergency Care, Occupational and Vocational Therapy, Opticianry, Orthopedic Prosthetics and Orthotics, Telehealth Technology, Medical Documentation and Secretarial Services, and Medical Data Processing Technology.

Burdur Mehmet Akif Ersoy University supports student and academic staff mobility in line with its internationalization strategy. It actively implements European Union-led programs such as Socrates/Erasmus and the national Farabi Exchange Program. Through relevant coordination units, the university conducts information campaigns and establishes academic collaborations with higher education institutions abroad under bilateral agreements.

The university has received various national and international awards for its academic work, project activities and institutional development.

TÜBİTAK Project Success: In the 2024–2025 period, MAKÜ ranked 31st among Turkish universities with 186 student projects accepted under TÜBİTAK’s 2209-A and 2209-B programs, representing a 70 percent increase compared to the previous period.^【2】

University-Industry Collaboration Award: In the 2024–2025 Academic Year Awards presented by the Council of Higher Education (YÖK), the project “Developed Topical Ointment for the Treatment of Microbial Wounds on Animal Skin and Hooves,” developed within the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, was honored. The award, presented at the Presidency Complex, was granted due to the project’s full use of indigenous and plant-based materials and its potential to address 40 percent of foot diseases in the industry.^【3】

Sports-Friendly Campus: In an evaluation by YÖK, MAKÜ was awarded the “Sports-Friendly Campus” title and prize for the 2025–2028 period for meeting criteria including infrastructure, activities and student participation.^【4】

Accessible University Awards: In the 2024 Accessible University Awards, the İstiklal Campus and Prof. Dr. İlhan Varank Library received the Accessible Environment Award (Orange Flag), while the Faculty of Sports Sciences received the Accessible Education Award (Green Flag).^【5】

International Organization Award: The university, which hosted the 13th European University Table Tennis Championship, was awarded the “International Organization Award” by the Turkish University Sports Federation (TÜSF) for its success in organizing the event.^【6】

THE Impact Rankings 2025: In the Times Higher Education (THE) 2025 Impact Rankings, MAKÜ entered the global top 400 universities in the categories of “Affordable and Clean Energy” and “Life on Land.” It also ranked in the 601–800 band for “Quality Education.”^【7】

The university supports students’ participation in social, cultural and sporting activities alongside their academic development. Student organizations within the university organize events across various fields. Orientation programs are provided at the beginning of each academic year to help students adapt to university life.
