Caves with Forty Windows

Kırk Pencereli Mağaralar are cave formations located in the Karayazı district of Erzurum and were declared a protected site in 2021.^【1】 The caves contain traces of early human settlement. Scientific research is ongoing to determine the historical period to which these sites belong and who used them.

Geographical Location and Physical Characteristics

Kırk Pencereli Mağaralar are situated within the boundaries of Aşağı Çıkılgan village in the Karayazı district of Erzurum. Located at an altitude of approximately 2,000 meters, the caves attract attention due to their natural formation mechanisms and elevated position. The region is described as an area notable for its unique geological structure and evidence of early human settlement.^【2】

Historical Findings and Research

Observations within the caves have revealed traces indicating different uses such as churches, ovens, rooms, and wine cellars. Additionally, crosses have been identified in certain areas. Research initiatives coordinated by Atatürk University are planned to determine the historical period of these findings and to uncover the historical usage of the caves.^【3】

Tourism and Project Initiatives

Kırk Pencereli Mağaralar are considered one of Erzurum’s areas with tourism potential and are being incorporated into tourism routes. Various efforts are underway to promote the region and enhance its accessibility to visitors.^【4】

Under the “Kırk Pencereli Mağaralar Yürüyüş Yolu Fizibilite Projesi” supported by the Northeastern Anatolia Development Agency (KUDAKA), walking routes leading to the caves are being planned and sustainable tourism infrastructure is being developed. The project includes phases such as technical analyses, geological surveys, and the development of visitor guidance systems.^【5】

Kırk Pencereli Mağaralar are a well-known local site named by the regional population, deriving its name from the numerous window-like openings visible in the caves. The area draws attention through cultural narratives preserved in local memory and its natural features, possessing high tourism potential.^【6】
