Derebalık Plateau

Derebalık Yaylası is a high-altitude plateau located within the boundaries of Yığılca district, Düzce Province, renowned for its natural beauty and walking trails. The plateau exhibits the humid climatic characteristics of the Black Sea Region and is an important destination for both traditional transhumance practices and nature-based tourism.

Geographical Location and Regional Access

Derebalık Yaylası is administratively affiliated with Yığılca district and lies approximately 25 kilometres from the district centre. Access to the plateau is possible during summer months via private vehicles; however, the route is limited to stabilized forest roads, making access seasonal and challenging. The geographical setting of the plateau features the undulating topography of Western Black Sea region, composed of forested areas and open grasslands. This landscape provides an ideal foundation for natural walking routes and camping activities.

Natural Landscape Features and Vegetation

Derebalık Yaylası lies within a transitional zone between broadleaf forests and open grasslands. The forested areas are dominated by species such as beech, oak, and hornbeam, with occasional clearings that enhance the diversity of the plateau’s scenery. Herbaceous plants growing naturally in the meadows and region-specific floristic elements are also observed. The presence of natural water sources has created moist habitats around streams and small water pools.

Hiking Trails and Nature Activities

Derebalık Yaylası is one of the officially registered nature walking trails by the Düzce Provincial Directorate of Culture and Tourism. The trail is approximately 4 kilometres long and classified as easy in difficulty, making it accessible to both professional and amateur hikers. During the walk, participants experience a balanced route through forest cover, natural stream beds, and open landscapes. Along the trail, passive nature experiences such as ambient natural sounds and birdwatching are also encouraged.
