Elazığ Çedene Coffee

In the Elazığ region, a unique type of coffee is known and consumed, derived from the local plant called “çedene.” Çedene is a valuable tree native to Elazığ and its surroundings, whose fruit has been used for centuries by the local population in coffee production. This coffee variety is a traditional beverage with a distinctive place in Elazığ’s culture and has been valued by the regional community for various purposes.

Çedene Plant and Its Uses

The çedene tree has persisted for centuries within the geographical and cultural framework of Harput and its surroundings, gaining value through influences from various cultures. The tree also has medicinal applications. In particular, the resin known as “bıvı,” extracted from the çedene tree, was historically used to treat inflamed wounds caused by cutting instruments such as knives, swords, and arrows. The fruit, meanwhile, is consumed in the form of coffee.

Preparation and Characteristics

Çedene coffee is prepared using a specialized method from the fruits harvested from the çedene tree. Unlike traditional Turkish coffee, this variety is unique exclusively to the Elazığ region. It holds cultural significance as a beverage offered to guests, distinguished by its distinctive aroma and scent.

Geographical Indication Registration

An application for “Elazığ Çedene Coffee” was submitted on 18 February 2021 (Application No: C2021/000072), prepared through collaboration between the Technical Staff of the Plant Production and Plant Health Branch Directorate of Elazığ Provincial Directorate and the Elazığ Chamber of Commerce. On 22 February 2022, the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office examined and approved the application, granting the çedene coffee a “Geographical Indication” certificate. This registration is significant as it officially recognizes the product’s geographical origin and uniqueness.
