Elazığ Menceki Wheat

Elazığ Menceki Wheat is a local durum wheat variety (Triticum durum ssp. compactum) native to Elazığ province in Türkiye, preserving its original genetic structure. It was officially registered under its place of origin on 16 September 2021 and granted geographical indication protection under Law No. 6769 on Industrial Property. The registration application was submitted by the Elazığ Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Elazığ Directorate of Agriculture and Forestry, and the SS Elazığ Sugar Beet Growers Cooperative.

Origin and Ecological Dependence

This wheat is a naturally occurring variant of the wild diploid species Gernik, which has 28 chromosomes and can only be propagated from its own seed. This genetically pure variety is tightly bound to the unique climatic and soil conditions of Elazığ province. The microclimate formed by the Euphrates River and its surrounding dams—Keban, Kalecik, Cip, and Karakaya—plays a decisive role in the wheat’s development. This climate supports rapid root development during early growth stages while enhancing cold and drought resistance.

Morphological and Physical Characteristics

Elazığ Menceki Wheat is a winter-type variety exhibiting a semi-prostrate to semi-erect growth habit. Plant height ranges from 80 to 140 cm. Spikelets are white, densely packed, and awned, with a length of 3.5 to 7 cm and 24 to 30 grains per spikelet. Grains are large, elongated, and have a convex back; a prominent longitudinal fissure runs along the entire length of the front surface.

These characteristics enable this wheat, particularly when grown in clay-loam soils, to stand out for its high vitreousness and hardness values.

Growing Conditions and Production Method

Elazığ Menceki Wheat is a cool-season cereal. Optimal germination and tillering require temperatures of 8–10 °C and relative humidity above 60%. During stem elongation, temperatures of 10–15 °C and 65% humidity are needed. A total rainfall of 500 mm distributed throughout the growing season is sufficient for optimal yield. Temperatures below -3 °C during heading can cause damage.

Soil preference is for deep, well-drained clay-loam structures. The fallow-sowing system or crop rotation is generally practiced. Sowing is carried out in autumn when soil temperature reaches 8–10 °C. Seed rates are 22–24 kg per hectare when drilled and 26–28 kg per hectare when broadcast.

Fertilization is planned based on soil analysis. Half of the nitrogen fertilizer is applied at sowing and the other half during tillering. Irrigation is conducted especially during stem elongation and heading; if water is limited, irrigation is recommended only during heading. Weed control and, when necessary, agricultural chemical applications are implemented.

Harvesting is performed using combine harvesters or threshing machines. The produce is dried and stored in granaries. Seeds selected for replanting are processed through a selector and treated with appropriate chemicals to prepare for the next season. Yields range from 150–300 kg per hectare under dry conditions and 300–422 kg per hectare under irrigated conditions.

Usage and Monitoring

Elazığ Menceki Wheat is widely used in local dishes and soups. Products or their packaging must bear the label “Elazığ Menceki Wheat” and the origin emblem; if this is not feasible, the emblem must be prominently displayed at the production facility.

Monitoring is conducted at least twice annually under the coordination of the Elazığ Directorate of Agriculture and Forestry. Inspections verify seed suitability, product characteristics, compliance with production methods, and labeling accuracy. Expert individuals or institutions may be consulted when necessary.
