Fossil Words in Turkish (Book)

Fossil Words in Turkish, written by Gülcan Çolak, is a comprehensive study examining words that have fallen out of everyday use in Turkish but continue to persist in fixed expressions. The book focuses on the “linguistic resilience” of fossil words found in fixed expressions such as proverbs, tongue twisters, and idioms—elements that play a significant role in language and cultural transmission.

Çolak defines fossil words not merely as words that have lost their meaning but retain phonological patterns, but rather as linguistic elements that have lost independent usage yet survive within fixed structures. The book provides a detailed explanation of the conceptual distinctions between fossil words and archaic words. Archaic elements are identified through historical comparison, whereas fossil words occur exclusively within fixed expressions in contemporary Turkish.

The book consists of two main sections:

• Theoretical Framework: Fixed expressions are defined, the differences between fossil and archaic words are clarified, and the results of a qualitative interview-based study on the interpretation of fossil words are presented.
• Research on Fossil Words: Based on the Turkish National Corpus, a list of 212 fossil words is compiled, and their usage within contemporary fixed expressions is evaluated. These expressions are classified into proverbs, tongue twisters, relational phrases, reduplications, idioms, and compound expressions.

Some of the fossil words examined in the book include:

• Afra-tafra: To show off, to boast
• Büğrü: Hunchbacked, bent
• Çala: Time, opportunity
• Çıngar: Noise, quarrel
• Kerli-ferli: Flashy, well-dressed
• Tefek: Small, insignificant, weak

The study reveals that most of these fossil words have either become fully fossilized or are in the process of fossilization. It is also noted that the meanings of the fixed expressions containing these words remain comprehensible to contemporary speakers and do not pose communication difficulties.
