History of Istanbul Tulip Festival
The Istanbul Tulip Festival is a cultural event that has been organized by the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality since 2006. However, the roots of this festival date back to the Ottoman period.
The Place of Tulips in Ottoman and Turkish Culture
Tulips gained great popularity in the Ottoman Empire from the 16th century, especially around the palace. During the 18th century, the period known as the Tulip Era (1718–1730), tulips became widespread in daily life and were frequently seen in art, literature, and architecture. This period is known for the increase in cultural interaction with the West, where taste and aesthetics were given priority.
In the Ottoman period, various types of tulip bulbs were grown in gardens and palaces across Istanbul, and this flower turned into a widespread decorative element in the city. Tulips also became symbols of wealth and grandeur. The tulip appeared extensively in Divan literature and became an inseparable part of art and culture.

Transformation into a Modern Festival in 2006
The modern Istanbul Tulip Festival was first launched in 2006 with the slogan "Tulips are returning to Istanbul." The aim of this project was to draw attention to the historical significance of the tulip and to connect the public with natural beauty.
Launched in collaboration with the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality and the Parks and Gardens Directorate, 2 million tulips were planted in the first year of the festival. Over the years, this number has increased to over 30 million. Each year, new additions such as art exhibitions, concerts, competitions, and sports activities have been included in the festival.
Main Festival Locations
Emirgan Grove
Emirgan Grove is one of the first places that comes to mind when thinking about the Istanbul Tulip Festival. Millions of tulips are displayed in this park every year. During the festival, there are concerts by local music groups, traditional art workshops such as ebru and glassblowing. Additionally, there are stalls selling tulip-themed products and designated photo spots.
Göztepe 60th Year Park
Located on the Asian side of Istanbul, this park is one of the key stops of the festival. Pantomime shows, origami, and ceramic workshops are organized here, and popular music groups also perform in the park.
Other Locations
Other parks and groves in Istanbul, such as Hidiv Kasrı and Grove, Yıldız Park, and Gülhane Park, also host tulip exhibitions and events. In these areas, hundreds of thousands of tulips of different types are planted, providing visitors with visual diversity.
International Interest in the Festival
Over time, the festival has attracted not only the interest of Istanbul residents but also tourists, both domestic and international. Especially for photography enthusiasts, the festival has become a meeting point for both professional and amateur artists. Additionally, many embassies and cultural institutions from various countries provide support for the festival.
