James Hunt was born in the town of Belmont, in the county of Surrey, England. His father, Wallis Hunt, was a businessman. Hunt became involved in sports at an early age, competing individually in disciplines such as tennis and swimming. He received his education at Westminster School. During this time, he developed an interest in automobiles and decided at the age of 18 to begin a racing career.
Hunt began his involvement in motorsport at the club level with Mini racing, then moved to Formula Ford in 1968 and Formula 3 in 1969. His aggressive driving style occasionally drew criticism but increased his popularity among spectators.

James Hunt began his Formula 1 career in 1973 with the Hesketh Racing team. He achieved his first Formula 1 victory at the 1975 Dutch Grand Prix. During this period, he began to be recognized as a talented driver.
In the 1976 season, Hunt raced for the McLaren team and entered a championship battle with Ferrari driver Niki Lauda. Lauda’s return to racing sooner than expected after his crash at the German Grand Prix became one of the most dramatic moments of the season.

Hunt continued to win races during the 1977 season, but his performance became inconsistent compared to the previous year. After a disappointing season with the Wolf team in 1979, he retired from Formula 1. This decision was influenced by a loss of motivation and increasing technical competition in the sport.
After retirement, Hunt began commentating on Formula 1 races for the BBC. In his commentary career, he gained attention for his candid and direct style. His personal life was closely followed by the media; his marriages and social activities attracted public interest. He married Suzy Miller in 1974, but the marriage ended shortly afterward.
James Hunt died on 15 June 1993 at the age of 45 from a heart attack at his home in London. It was reported that shortly before his death, he planned to remarry.
Hunt’s life was portrayed in the 2013 film Rush, directed by Ron Howard, particularly focusing on his rivalry with Niki Lauda.
