Zehra Macide Tanır is a Turkish stage, film, and voice actress. She is recognized as an artist who played a role in the institutionalization of Turkish theater, known for her disciplined work ethic and commanding stage presence.

Born in 1922 in Amasya, Tanır’s father was Ibrahim Şükrü Bey, a veterinary officer. His support and encouragement played a decisive role in her decision to pursue an artistic career. Tanır continued her education at the Ankara State Conservatory and graduated in 1943 from its Theater and Opera Department.

Shortly after graduation in 1943, Macide Tanır joined the State Theaters, where she served continuously for 42 years until 1985. Throughout her career, she performed in more than 60 theater productions. Renowned for her strict adherence to stage discipline and meticulous approach to her art, she was affectionately known in the artistic community as “The Witch of Theater.”

Among her most notable performances in Turkish theater literature are roles in works such as Ağaçlar Ayakta Ölür and Dünya Gözüyle. Even after retiring from the State Theaters, she continued her artistic output, making significant contributions to radio theater and voice acting.

Although her career was primarily centered on theater, Macide Tanır also appeared in character roles in Turkish cinema and television series. Her film roles include notable productions such as Yer Demir Gök Bakır, Yengeç Sepeti, and Cumhuriyet. On television, she gained widespread recognition for her role in the series Şehnaz Tango. Documentaries about her, such as Yıllar Yollar Yüzler produced by TRT, also exist.

Macide Tanır was widely admired by artistic authorities for her performances and received numerous awards throughout her career. In addition to the “Best Female Actress” award granted by the Art Institution, she was honored with many prestigious accolades in recognition of her professional achievements. In 1991, she was conferred the title of “State Artist” by the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Türkiye for her contributions to Turkish culture and art.

The artist donated all of her assets to the Turkish Education Foundation (TEV) with the aim of serving public benefit. As a result of this donation, the “Zehra-Macide Tanır Scholarship Fund” was established in the names of her mother and herself. This fund continues to support the academic development of female students studying at medical faculties by covering their educational expenses.

Macide Tanır, who was receiving treatment in the intensive care unit of a hospital in Istanbul due to respiratory failure, passed away on 5 March 2013 at the age of 91. Her funeral was held at Emirgan Cemetery.
