Mira Nair (born 15 October 1957) is an internationally recognized film director producer writer and actor. She studied at Delhi University and Harvard University. She began her career as an actor and later turned to award-winning documentaries such as So Far from India and India Cabaret. Her first feature film Selam Bombay (1988) brought her widespread international acclaim. The film was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film and won 25 international awards including the Golden Camera (Camera dOr) for Best First Feature and the Audience Award (Prix du Publique) at the Cannes Film Festival.
Throughout her career Nair has directed films such as Mississippi Masala (1991) exploring interracial love stories Monsoon Wedding (2001) which won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival and critically acclaimed works like The Reluctant Fundamentalist (2012) and The Namesake (2006). Her works have collectively won 35 awards and received 26 nominations including two BAFTA nominations.
Mira Nair was born on 15 October 1957 in Bhubaneswar the capital of the Indian state of Orissa (now Odisha). Her father Amrit Nair was a civil servant. She began her education at Loreto Convent (Tara Hall) a boarding school in Shimla. She later studied sociology at Delhi University and graduated from there. In 1976 she received a full scholarship to attend Harvard University where she continued her education.
Mira Nair married photographer Mitch Epstein whom she met at Harvard. Since 1991 she has been married to academic Mahmood Mamdani. They have one son Zohran Mamdani (born 1991). Her son Zohran Mamdani is known as a politician in New York.
In addition to her cinematic career Mira Nair founded the Maisha Film Lab in Kampala Uganda in 2004 to train and support East African film producers. She was offered the opportunity to direct Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (2007) but declined the offer.【1】
Nair has stated that she is drawn to characters often described as outsiders. She finds them inspiring because she can see their contradictions such as the children in Selam Bombay or the characters in Kama Sutra. Her use of unconventional typefaces in film credits and her habit of ending closing credits with pictograms are considered signature elements of her directorial style.
