Nergis (Narcissus tazetta L.)

Nergis is a bulbous plant belonging to the Amaryllidaceae family. This plant, which typically blooms in midwinter and early spring, flower, has a wide distribution characteristic of the Mediterranean climate. It naturally grows across a geographic range extending from Spain to Iran and from Kashmir to China. In Türkiye, wild varieties of narcissus are found in the provinces of Samsun, İzmir, Diyarbakır, Van, Muğla, Antalya, İçel, Adana and Hatay like, and can also thrive under various climatic conditions in the country.

Narcissus plants are known for their elegant structure, pleasant fragrance and striking flowers. Their blooms may be white, yellow, pink or occasionally orange. One of the best-known species is Narcissus pseudonarcissus, commonly called the wild daffodil, distinguished by its large trumpet-shaped flowers. This species occurs naturally in the wild common and is frequently cultivated as a cut flower. The leaves of narcissus plants extend inward from the base, forming a crown-like structure that gives the flower its characteristic appearance.

Narcissus plants are cultivated as bulbous plants. These hardy species flower during spring months and thrive best in areas that do not receive direct sun sunlight but have good air circulation. The care of narcissus is generally straightforward; they can grow healthily even under cold climatic conditions. However, proper watering is an essential part of their maintenance. Cut narcissus flowers are highly popular in markets. They attract attention due to their bright yellow color, pleasant fragrance and elegant appearance. During Autumn and winter months, when these flowers are scarce in markets, they maintain significant place value among ornamental plants. However, the vase life of cut narcissus flowers is typically short. Vase life varies depending on ethylene gas production and the flower’s water uptake rate. Ethylene is a gas that accelerates flower aging, so methods such as chemical inhibitors of ethylene production (e.g. AVG) and cold storage storage are used to extend vase life. Additionally, new technologies such as modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) help preserve the quality of narcissus flowers during transport and storage.
