New Malatya Stadium

The New Malatya Stadium is located in the Battalgazi district of Malatya, at the east exit of the city, adjacent to place. It is situated near the İnönü University campus and directly beside a new expressway. With a capacity of approximately 25,000 spectators, stadium has been designed in accordance with UEFA and FIFA standards.

Design and Architecture

The architectural design of the stadium was carried out by Bahadır Kul Architects and Azaksu Mimarlık. As part of the project, the exterior façade was planned as a double-layered design inspired by Malatya’s famous apricots, featuring white and orange hues. A spacious entrance area is located on the southern side, which serves as the stadium’s most heavily used access point.

The Roof structure was constructed using lightweight steel framing and has a total weight of 2,800 tons. This roof covers not only the only stands but also the ring open areas of the stadium.

Earthquake Event and Aftermath

The New Malatya Stadium suffered significant damage due to the Kahramanmaraş-centered earthquakes on 6 February 2023. The stadium’s stands and facilities were used as shelter for earthquake victims. The Turkish Football Federation (TFF) relocated the stadium’s e-ticket and turnstile systems to another venue. During this period, Yeni Malatyaspor was forced to play its home matches in different cities.

Post-earthquake assessments revealed that the pitch required repairs and that various structural damages were present in the stands. As part of restoration work initiated in 2024, the pitch was renewed, tribune repairs were carried out, and the turnstile-camera systems were reinstalled.

With the completion of these works, together reopened on 23 November 2024 with the match between Yeni Malatyaspor and İstanbulspor, 665 day after the earthquake.

Future Plans and Usage Objectives

The New Malatya Stadium will not only host football matches but will also be adapted for concerts and other large-scale events. According to announcements by the Ministry of Youth and Sports, maintenance and modernization efforts will continue, enabling the stadium to accommodate an increasing number of sporting events in the future.

With Yeni Malatyaspor resuming its home matches at the stadium, a revival of football in Malatya and an increase in fan support are anticipated.
