Sındırgı Cornice

Sındırgı kornişonu (Cucumis sativus, pickling variety) is a small-sized, hard-skinned cucumber variety cultivated in the Sındırgı district of Türkiye’s Balıkesir province. It was officially registered with geographical indication status by the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office in 2023, acquiring distinctive characteristics through the influence of local knowledge and geographical conditions during production, processing and marketing. The product is regarded as a high-value example symbolizing the region’s agricultural transformation, drawing attention through traditional production methods, modern irrigation systems and growing export capacity.

Geographical Indication Registration and Origin Status

Sındırgı kornişonu was registered by TÜRKPATENT on 6 July 2023 (Registration No: 1403), following an application submitted by the Sındırgı Municipality on 31 December 2020. The product protected under geographical indication includes only those cucumbers grown and processed within the boundaries of the Sındırgı district. This status legally reinforces the strong “link to place” by certifying not only the product’s physical attributes but also the local knowledge and environmental factors embedded in its production process.

Botanical Characteristics and Physicochemical Composition

Sındırgı kornişonu stands out particularly for its hard skin, high water content and suitability for pickling. According to the registration certificate, the product possesses the following characteristics:

Size classes:

Class 1: 0–6 cm

Class 2: 6–9 cm

Class 3: 9–12 cm

Moisture content: 93–95%

Total acidity (citric): 0.11–0.13 g/100 g

Ash content: 0.89–0.92 g/100 g

Magnesium: 382–383.9 mg/kg

Iron: 10–11.7 mg/kg

In terms of cultivation, the product yields best in well-drained sandy-loamy soils at medium to high elevations. Heavy soils are avoided due to their tendency to promote root rot and other diseases.

Agricultural Production and Irrigation Infrastructure

The success of Sındırgı kornişonu is fundamentally shaped by modern agricultural practices as well as reservoir and irrigation systems supported by the State Hydraulic Works (DSİ) and the Balıkesir Metropolitan Municipality. These infrastructure investments played a crucial supporting role during the transition from tobacco farming to cucumber cultivation. Current production data are as follows:

Annual production: 20,000–30,000 tons

Number of producers: 2,000–3,000 households

Export capacity: 1,600–28,000 tons (main destinations: EU countries, Russia, France)

In this context, Sındırgı kornişonu has established itself as a strategic product for the pickling industry, not only in domestic markets but also internationally.
