The Earth's limited natural resources are rapidly depleting due to increasing population and industrial demands. This situation has led humanity to seek alternative resources. In recent years, the concept of space mining, particularly the idea of extracting valuable minerals from celestial bodies such as asteroids and the Moon, has garnered significant interest in both the scientific community and the private sector.

Resource Potential in Space

Asteroids and the Moon are celestial bodies rich in valuable metals and rare earth elements. For instance, the asteroid named 16 Psyche is rich in metals such as iron, nickel, and gold, with an estimated total value of 100,000 quadrillion dollars. Similarly, the presence of resources like water ice and helium-3 has been detected on the lunar surface. The discovery of these resources enhances the potential of space mining.

Technological Developments

Technologies required for space mining are rapidly advancing. NASA's Psyche mission, launched in 2023, aims to study the metal-rich asteroid 16 Psyche. Such missions are critically important for assessing the technical and economic feasibility of space mining. Private companies are also investing in this field. For example, Intuitive Machines has sent a commercial rover to the Moon's south pole to search for water ice. These developments indicate that space mining could become a commercial reality in the near future.

Odint Mission

The Odin mission, recently conducted by AstroForge with private funding, tested the applicability of a model developed for detecting platinum-group metals on asteroids within the scope of deep space exploration. The mission was executed in under ten months using a rapid iteration method and at a low cost (approximately 3.5 million dollars); the spacecraft traveled beyond the Moon and successfully positioned itself in the designated orbit. Although ground station issues and communication disruptions were experienced within the first 48 hours, the data obtained provided critical insights into spacecraft design, operational processes, and risk management. These experiences formed the basis for systematic improvements and design revisions for the subsequent Vestri mission.

Economic and Political Impacts

The economic impacts of space mining could be extensive. The acquisition of abundant valuable metals could lead to a decrease in global market prices and reduce costs in related industries. However, this situation could also cause economic fluctuations in existing mining sectors. Politically, the utilization of space resources could intensify international competition. A new field of rivalry may emerge, particularly among space-active countries such as the USA, China, and Russia. Therefore, it is important that space mining is conducted within a framework of international cooperation and regulations. Furthermore, the potential of space mining makes it possible to benefit from resources valued at billions of dollars. According to a study, minerals found on asteroid 241 Germania alone are projected to contribute 66.2 trillion dollars to the global economy. It is stated that minerals obtained from mining activities on asteroids by astronauts could have a major impact on the world economy.

Legal Framework

Space mining brings forth not only technological and economic questions but also legal and ethical ones. The Space Resources Utilization Act, adopted by the United States in 2015, ensures that resources extracted in space belong to private companies. However, this law is not universally accepted internationally, and a global consensus needs to be established regarding the regulation of space mining.

From an international law perspective, the legal dimension of space mining becomes more complex. The Outer Space Treaty of 1967, while stating that outer space and celestial bodies cannot be subject to national appropriation by claim of sovereignty, does not contain clear provisions regarding the extraction and ownership of resources. This lacuna leads to legal uncertainties and potential disputes in the international arena. Therefore, it is of great importance that space mining activities are brought under clearer and more precise regulations within the framework of international law.

Future Perspectives

While space mining offers a potential solution to Earth's resource crisis, it also promises new economic opportunities and technological advancements. However, progress in this field depends on factors such as overcoming technological challenges, ensuring economic feasibility, and clarifying the international legal framework. A successful space mining industry could strengthen humanity's presence in space and create new economic opportunities. Space mining holds great significance due to both its potential to solve Earth's resource problems and its likelihood of increasing international competition. Technological advancements and international collaborations will determine how this field will be shaped in the future. Therefore, global cooperation and regulations are important for the sustainable and equitable development of space mining.
