Taşkınpaşa Medresesi

Taşkınpaşa Medresesi is a historical medrese structure located in the center of Taşkınpaşa Village, in the Ürgüp district of Nevşehir, alongside the Ürgüp-Soğanlı road. It is generally accepted to have been constructed in the mid-14th century during the period of the Karamanids.

Location

The medrese is situated approximately 20 km south of the Ürgüp district center, in the center of Taşkınpaşa Village. The structure is integrated into the settlement fabric and maintains spatial relationships with other elements of the külliye.

History

The original foundation inscription of Taşkınpaşa Medresesi has not survived to the present day. Its dating is based on architectural features and historical data from other structures within the külliye. Accordingly, the medrese is dated to the 14th century and associated with the Karamanid period.^【1】

Architectural Features

Plan and Building Materials

Taşkınpaşa Medresesi has a plan close to square. Cut stone and rubble stone were used in its construction. The surviving wall fabric provides information regarding the original building technique.

Portal

A projecting portal is located on the western facade. The area around the portal is adorned with geometric decorations and ornamental bands. The portal is considered one of the key elements defining the architectural identity of the structure.

Interior Spatial Organization

The medrese consists of spaces arranged around an open courtyard. To the right of the entrance is a mosque, whose stone mihrab has survived in its original form. The roof structure is no longer extant. Staircase traces in the entrance area suggest that the building may have originally had two stories.

Function

The original function of the medrese is generally accepted to have been educational. However, some interpretations associate the structure with a tekke or other functions during its historical development. These interpretations are based on the building’s floor plan and its position within the külliye. Today, the structure is used for cultural purposes in its restored state. Some sources indicate that the medrese was also used as a public library.

Conservation Status

Taşkınpaşa Medresesi is listed in the inventory of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism and holds the status of a first-degree protected immovable cultural heritage. Restoration work was carried out on the structure in 1997. Currently, the building is under the responsibility of the General Directorate of Foundations.
