The Tekirdağ Museum of Archaeology and Ethnography is located in the Süleymanpaşa district of Tekirdağ, Türkiye, within the Marmara Region. The museum presents the cultural heritage of the Thrace region, spanning from prehistoric times to the Ottoman era. Established in 1967, it is one of the most significant cultural heritage centers of Tekirdağ today.

History and Architectural Features

The current museum building was constructed in 1927 by architect Kazım Tahsin. Originally serving as the Governor’s Mansion, it was converted into a museum in 1976. The two-story masonry building is designed with classical masonry techniques.

The main entrance on the north façade is decorated with blue-and-white İznik tiles. Above the entrance, a balcony supported by two stone consoles features railing decorations with circle and star motifs. Upper-floor windows have barrel-vaulted tops with İznik tile decoration, while ground-floor windows are rectangular, with embossed decorative elements under their sills. Two additional balconies constructed from masonry are located on the west and south façades. The roof is hipped and tiled, and an inscription is placed above the main entrance.

Collections and Exhibition Areas

The museum’s collection comprises 23,901 artifacts, categorized as follows:

  • 4,863 archaeological artifacts
  • 17,129 coins
  • 1,909 ethnographic items

The museum contains four main exhibition halls:

  • Stone Artifacts Hall: Exhibits architectural fragments and stone artifacts from Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman periods, designed to complement the open-air displays.

  • Archaeological Artifacts Hall: Displays items from daily life spanning prehistoric, Thracian, Roman, and Byzantine periods.

  • Ethnographic Artifacts Hall: Features everyday objects, traditional clothing, and handicrafts from the Ottoman era.

  • Old Tekirdağ Room: A traditional 19th-century Tekirdağ house room arrangement illustrating local life.

The exhibits are arranged chronologically and thematically, starting from artifacts dating back to c. 4500 BCE, covering Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman periods.

Open-Air Exhibition Area

The museum extends beyond its indoor collections, featuring artifacts from regional archaeological excavations in its garden. Key items include discoveries from the ancient city of Heraion-Teikhos (Hera’s City) in Süleymanpaşa. These artifacts provide valuable insights into the area’s ancient history. Additionally, architectural fragments, sarcophagi, grave steles, altar stones, milestone markers from Hellenistic, Roman, and Byzantine periods, as well as Ottoman-era fountains, gravestones, and inscriptions are displayed outdoors.

Visitor Data and Cultural Impact

By 2024, approximately 4,000 artifacts were on display, with over 20,000 additional items preserved in storage. During peak periods such as national holidays, the museum has hosted around 6,000 visitors, reflecting a significant increase in tourist interest. Local authorities expect visitor numbers to potentially double by year-end.
