The Characteristics of the Perfect Spiritual Guide According to Imam al-Ghazali

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Peace be upon you. In the chaos of the modern age, people easily access knowledge, but those blessed with wisdom feel its touch. The sections on the shaykh and Sufism in Imam Ghazali’s book Eyyühe’l-Veled remind us that even a mind filled with knowledge can attain peace only through the guidance of a spiritual teacher. This writing seeks to carry forward Ghazali’s ancient warning into today’s world, and above all, to help one find a true “spiritual guide.” Ghazali wrote this book in response to a student who asked him, “What is beneficial knowledge?”—addressing him as a “spiritual son.” I strongly recommend reading the entire book. If you are ready, let us turn to the words of Imam Ghazali.

Be Guided on the Path of Truth!

I will now explain to you what is necessary for one who walks the Path of Truth.

Know that the seeker of the Path of Truth must have a guide, a murshid, who will purify his character by removing its vices and replacing them with virtues, and who will nurture him.

Spiritual training is like the work of a farmer who removes thorns and weeds from his field so that its harvest may ripen beautifully.

For one who wishes to enter the path of truth, it is essential to have a guide before him who will show him the ways to Allah. Indeed, Allah Almighty has sent prophets to guide His servants to His path.

When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) departed from this world to the Hereafter, he left behind caliphs to guide people in his stead.

To serve as a representative of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), one must first be a scholar. Yet not every scholar is fit to be a representative.【1】

Now I will briefly outline some signs of a guide who may legitimately serve as a representative of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). These must be well known, so that no one may falsely claim to be a murshid.

A true murshid turns away from love of this world and status.

His spiritual lineage traces back unbroken to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).

He has trained his lower self and possesses noble character. He speaks little, eats little, sleeps little, prays much, fasts often, and gives charity generously.

Moreover, he embodies the virtues he has acquired under the guidance of a shaykh of insight: patience, supplication, gratitude, reliance on Allah, certainty, contentment, inner peace, composure, humility, knowledge, sincerity, modesty, loyalty, dignity, tranquility, and self-restraint.

When a person possesses these qualities, he becomes a light drawn from the light of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and it becomes obligatory to follow him.

Such individuals are as rare as red sulfur.【2】

Duties of the Seeker of Truth

Good tidings to the one who finds such a murshid and is accepted by him! Such a seeker must honor his murshid outwardly and inwardly. By outward honor, I mean refraining from arguing with him, even if he believes the murshid is mistaken on some matter.

He must not spread his prayer mat before him except during prayer times; he should do so only when praying and remove it immediately after prayer.

He must not perform excessive voluntary prayers in his presence.

He must strive to carry out whatever his shaykh commands, to the best of his ability.

He must inwardly accept what he outwardly listens to and obeys; he must not deny it in deed or word. He must avoid this out of fear of hypocrisy.

If he cannot achieve this unity of inner and outer state, he must leave the side of his murshid until his inner and outer selves become one, and he must avoid associating with wicked people, so that the influence of people and satanic jinn may diminish. He must do this for the sake of purifying his heart and removing the stains of satanic influence. And in every circumstance, he must prefer poverty over wealth.【3】

Sufism

Know that Sufism has two characteristics: steadfastness on the path and kind treatment of people.

Whoever remains steadfast in religion and refines his character toward others, treating them with forbearance and kindness, is a true Sufi.

Steadfastness means sacrificing one’s desires and inclinations for the sake of freeing oneself from the lower self—that is, abandoning its evil cravings and submitting to the Truth.

Treating people kindly means not imposing one’s own desires upon others; rather, as long as it does not contradict the Sharia, one should place the desires and inclinations of others upon one’s own self.【4】

In conclusion, the teachings on the shaykh and Sufism in Eyyühe’l-Veled equip a student with wisdom, enabling him to recognize his inner journey and mature his heart. Ghazali’s words remind us of the balance between knowledge and action, and once again illuminate the true value of authentic spiritual guidance and leadership—especially in contexts where certain paths have sometimes become entangled in superficial displays or personal interests. Every person who trains his heart, intention, and will with pure sincerity can, even amid the chaos of the modern world, sense the quiet yet powerful guidance of truth, and thus embark on a genuine journey not merely of knowledge, but of wisdom and truth—by the permission of Allah.

True knowledge is found only in the light of the Qur’an al-Karim and authentic hadith. Therefore, we must not hastily accept or blindly adhere to every claim we hear. For instance, in our time, I have heard many say: “If he is my shaykh, my teacher, or my master, then it must be true,” and they blindly attach themselves to such claims. Instead, we must ask: “What does Allah (exalted is He) say? What does Islam say? What does the Qur’an al-Karim say? What did the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say?” If we ask these questions, we will, by the permission of Allah, always find the truth.

Thank you for reading. As I said at the beginning, I once again urge you to read the entire book of Eyyühe’l-Veled.
