Thomas Müller was born on 13 September 1989 in Weilheim, West Germany, and grew up in the village of Pähl. His interest in football began at an early age, and he joined the youth teams of his local club TSV Pähl. In 2000, at the age of ten, Müller joined the youth academy of Bayern Munich, where he demonstrated strong performances across various age groups. It is noted that he scored 26 goals in 53 matches for the U19 team, and during this period he completed his secondary education.
Müller was promoted to Bayern Munich’s first team in the 2008–2009 season by then-head coach Jürgen Klinsmann. He made his professional debut on 15 August 2008 against Hamburg. Although he was occasionally sent back to the reserve team at the start of his career, he scored his first goal for the first team in March 2009 in a UEFA Champions League match against Sporting Lisbon.
The turning point in his career came with the arrival of Dutch coach Louis van Gaal as Bayern Munich’s head coach in the summer of 2009. Van Gaal integrated Müller into the first team. During the 2009–2010 season, he played in 52 official matches, missing only one due to a red card suspension. He contributed 19 goals and 16 assists to the team that season.
As of 2025, Müller has appeared in over 600 official matches for Bayern Munich and is among the club’s most capped players. With the club, he has won 12 Bundesliga titles, six DFB-Pokal trophies, eight DFL-Supercup titles, two UEFA Champions League titles, two UEFA Super Cups, and two FIFA Club World Cups. He played a key role during the historic treble-winning season of 2012–2013 and the sextuple-winning campaign of 2019–2020.
Thomas Müller first wore the national team jersey in 2010 and participated in the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa that same year. He won the Golden Boot award after scoring five goals and providing three assists, and was also named the Best Young Player. He also played in the 2014 FIFA World Cup, where Germany won the title. In Brazil, he contributed significantly to Germany’s championship journey, scoring a hat-trick against Portugal in the group stage and netting a goal in the 7–1 victory over host nation Brazil in the semifinal. He finished the tournament with five goals, earning the Silver Boot award. In total, he has made 129 appearances for the national team and scored 45 goals.
The term "Raumdeuter" describes Müller’s role on the pitch. His main playing characteristics include:
Müller prefers to keep his private life away from the media. He lives with his wife Lisa Trede, who is involved in equestrianism. The couple runs a horse farm together, and Lisa participates in equestrian competitions. As of 2025, Müller has announced that his 25-year career with Bayern Munich will come to an end. In an interview with FIFA, he described this departure as "the end of a long journey" and stated that he is preparing to part ways with the club.
