Türkiye Coal Corporation

Türkiye Taşkömürü Kurumu (TTK) is the state institution responsible for bituminous coal production and mining activities in Türkiye. TTK is regarded as the continuation of the coal mining tradition in the Zonguldak basin and was established on 19 October 1983 through the transformation of the Ereğli Coal Enterprises (EKİ) facility, previously under Türkiye Kömür İşletmeleri, into an independent general directorate. Since TTK inherited the legacy of bituminous coal mining activities that began in the Zonguldak basin in 1848, the year 1848 is recognized as the institution’s founding year.

To add strategic bituminous coal reserves to the national economy through appropriate and safe methods that meet the needs of the iron and steel and energy sectors while taking environmental impacts into account.

To be the leading institution that meets a significant portion of Türkiye’s metallurgical coal demand while advancing underground coal mining through its knowledge and expertise.

Legal Framework

The institution operates under the Basic Statute of Türkiye Taşkömürü Kurumu, published in the Official Gazette on 11 December 1984, pursuant to Decree-Law No. 233 and approved by the High Coordination Council for Economic Affairs.

Area of Activity

Its operations are confined to the Zonguldak Bituminous Coal Basin. This area was originally defined by the Imperial Decree (Tesker-i Samiye) No. 289 dated 17 January 1910 during the Ottoman period and was later expanded by Decree No. 6/10692 dated 7 September 1968 to cover a total area of 13,350 km². In addition to bituminous coal production, TTK also engages in activities related to mine safety, rescue, and first aid services. The institution conducts inspection, supervision, and training services concerning occupational health and safety in both underground and surface workplaces.

Facilities

The organization consists of the General Directorate and affiliated facilities. The Armutçuk, Amasra, Üzülmez, Karadon, and Kozlu Bituminous Coal Enterprises are TTK’s primary production units. These facilities aim to maximize the efficient utilization of bituminous coal reserves to contribute to the national economy.

As the central institution for bituminous coal production and mining in Türkiye, Türkiye Taşkömürü Kurumu preserves its historical legacy and continues to contribute to the national economy.
