Turkmen El Carpet

Turkmen hand-knotted carpet is a traditional carpet type woven on hand looms using the Turkish knot (double knot) technique, closely associated with the Sandıklı district of Afyonkarahisar. Registered by the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office as a Geographical Indication, the Turkmen hand-knotted carpet was granted geographical indication protection on 14 November 1997 following an application by the Sandıklı Municipality. This carpet type, identified specifically with Afyonkarahisar Province and the Sandıklı district, is woven in accordance with defined technical specifications.

The Turkmen hand-knotted carpet belongs to the group of carpets known as the “Turkmen” type and is woven using the Turkish knot (double knot) technique. The carpet’s quality corresponds to 672 knots per square centimetre (1 dm²). The pile height is determined to be between 12 and 13 mm. For the pile yarn, 3.5/4 count wool is used; for the warp yarn, 4/4 count wool; for the thick weft yarn, 4/4 count wool; and for the thin weft yarn, 4/2 count wool. The total material consumption per square metre is established at 6075 g, comprising 4650 g of pile yarn, 810 g of warp yarn, 340 g of thick weft yarn, and 275 g of thin weft yarn.

The production method of the Turkmen hand-knotted carpet must conform to the registered technical specifications. The carpet is woven on hand looms using the specified type and quality of Turkish knot.

The use of this geographical indication for products manufactured by others is subject to monitoring mechanisms under Article 20 of the relevant Decree with the Force of Law. Inspections are continuously carried out during both production and marketing phases by Regional Directorates, Factory Directorates, and the Quality Control Commission. The use of this geographical name is prohibited for carpets that do not meet the specified technical characteristics.
