Uludaz Tepesi is a natural elevation located in the Onikişubat district of Kahramanmaraş, known for hosting dense populations of ladybugs, especially during the spring months, and holds significance for the region’s biological diversity and ecotourism potential.

Geographical Location and Elevation

Uludaz Tepesi is situated in the eastern part of the Mediterranean Region, within the Ahır Dağı mountain range. Approximately 20 kilometers from the city center of Kahramanmaraş, the peak reaches an elevation of 2,276 meters, making it one of the highest natural formations in the area. Due to this altitude, both the climate and ecosystem characteristics differ significantly from surrounding lowlands, with cool and dry conditions prevailing during summer months. The summit offers a broad panoramic view and presents striking landscapes at sunrise and sunset.

Ladybug Phenomenon

The most striking feature distinguishing Uludaz Tepesi from similar mountainous areas in Türkiye is the annual influx of ladybugs that swarm the peak at the beginning of summer. Their aggregation in large numbers during July and August attracts attention from both local residents and nature photographers. According to official statements from the Kahramanmaraş Governorate, this phenomenon is linked exclusively to unique microclimatic conditions of the region and is not the result of natural migration or reproductive behavior. Ladybugs are observed clustering densely on rocky surfaces, between stones, and in shrubland areas on the hill.

Nature Tourism and Ecotourism Potential

Thanks to its unique natural phenomenon, the “Ladybug Festival” is held annually in July, injecting vitality into regional tourism. Organized with contributions from the Turkish Republic of Onikişubat Municipality, the event includes nature walks, camping activities, ecological awareness programs, and photography competitions. The majority of visitors arrive by private vehicles, either individually or in groups. However, the poor condition of the roads leading to the peak often necessitates the use of off-road vehicles. Nevertheless, the area is noted to have significant potential for development in terms of infrastructure and guided tour services suitable for nature tourism.

Flora and Fauna

Due to its high elevation, the vegetation surrounding Uludaz Tepesi consists primarily of alpine meadows, remnants of maquis shrubland, and herbaceous plants. In addition to the ladybugs, various species of butterflies, bees, and grasshoppers have been observed in the region. According to an Anadolu Agency report, this biodiversity makes the area particularly attractive to nature observers and biological researchers.
