Location and Physical Features
Yazılı Canyon Nature Park is approximately 20 kilometers from Sütçüler district center. Its borders are within Çandır Village. Covering an area of 600 hectares, the park features a canyon with an average depth ranging from 100 to 400 meters. The Göksu River runs through the canyon’s center. The park derives its name from the ancient inscriptions on its walls. Alongside the rock inscriptions, the high cliffs surrounding the canyon and its rich flora provide visual diversity to the area.
Historical and Archaeological Elements
The canyon walls host religious structures, altars, and inscriptions from the Byzantine period. The most famous of these inscriptions is a poem titled “The Free Man”, attributed to the Greek philosopher Epictetus. This inscription associates the concept of freedom with an individual’s character, sincerity, and virtue. The philosophical text carved into the rock holds significance for both literature and philosophy and is considered the historical document from which the canyon takes its name.
The canyon is also situated on the historical King’s Road route, an important land transportation corridor in ancient times. Furthermore, according to the Bible, Saint Paul passed through this canyon while traveling from Perge to Pisidia Antioch, giving the canyon additional importance in Christian history.
Natural Structure and Biological Diversity
The canyon attracts attention with the ecosystem formed by the Göksu River. Narrow trails along the canyon walls and the surrounding rich vegetation make the park suitable for nature walks all year round. The nature park is regionally important in terms of flora and fauna diversity. Forested areas along the river contain various tree species, shrubs, vines, and seasonal flowers. In terms of wildlife, birds, small mammals, reptiles, and various aquatic species can be observed.

Hiking Trails and Route Information
The hiking trail begins at the road leading from Çandır Village to Sütçüler district, at the end of the path that separates for Yazılı Canyon. Visitors can reach the canyon entrance by car. At this point, basic amenities such as a small cafeteria, water, and restrooms are provided.
From the canyon entrance, the trail initially follows a path alongside the Göksu River and high rock formations. After approximately 300 meters, visitors cross to the opposite side via an iron bridge. Here, they encounter the rock inscription containing Epictetus’ “The Free Man” poem, the historical text that gives the canyon its name.
After the inscription, the trail continues for about one kilometer, following the riverbank and offering ideal views for nature photography and observation. At the trail’s end, an open area merges with a short path descending to the left, leading to the natural water source known as “The Place Where Water Emerges.” Beyond this point, the path ends, and advancing further into the canyon requires water crossing, which is not recommended without technical skills and safety equipment.
