Bergama Hand-Knotted Carpet

Bergama hand-knotted rug is a handwoven carpet produced in the Bergama district of İzmir Province and its surrounding areas using traditional weaving techniques, natural wool yarn, and plant-based dyes. It was officially registered in 1997 by the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office with a "Geographical Indication" mark.

The Bergama hand-knotted rug is woven using the Turkish knot (double knot) technique at a density of 1,280 knots per square decimeter in a 32x40 quality. The pile height varies between 7 and 10 mm. All yarns—pile, warp, and weft—are made of wool. The yarn counts used are respectively 2/1 (pile), 4/3 (warp), and 4/2 (thick and thin weft). Approximately 4,600 grams of wool are consumed per square meter of rug.

The patterns and motifs used in the rug reflect traditional symbols of the regional culture. These include stylized plant and animal figures, geometric motifs, and symmetrical compositions. Rugs are typically woven in seven main patterns: Yuntdağ, Yağcıbedir, Kozak, Sarı Kız, Eski Bergama, Kız Bergama, and Yeni Bergama. Colors are obtained using natural plant-based dyes.

1. Yarn is produced from wool and dyed using natural root dyes.
2. After the warp threads are stretched on the loom, the pile yarns are knotted using the Turkish knot technique.
3. After each row of knots, the weft threads are inserted and compacted.
4. Once weaving is complete, the rug is sheared, its edges are knotted, and it is cleaned.
