Royal Parks Half Marathon is one of the largest and most popular half marathon events in the United Kingdom, held annually in central London. Participants run approximately 13 miles (21 kilometers), passing the city’s iconic landmarks and four major Royal Parks. Since its inception in 2008, the event has become an integral part of London’s cultural calendar, standing out not only as a sports competition but also for its environmentally friendly practices, collaborations with charities, and broad participant base.

History and Development

The Royal Parks Half Marathon was first organized in 2008 by The Royal Parks charity. Initially attended by 6,000 participants, the event has grown significantly, expanding its capacity to 16,000 runners. International participation has also increased over the years, with athletes from more than 60 countries taking part in the 2024 edition. Registration for the race opens online each January, with entry available either through the public ballot system or by securing a charity place. The race both starts and finishes in Hyde Park, London.

Route

The Royal Parks Half Marathon features a single-lap, flat course that begins and ends in Hyde Park. Runners pass through Hyde Park, Kensington Gardens, St. James’s Park, and The Green Park, encountering many of London’s significant historical and cultural landmarks along the way. Notable sites visible along the course include Buckingham Palace, Wellington Arch, the Houses of Parliament, Royal Albert Hall, and the Serpentine Lake. The generally flat profile with only slight inclines makes the course suitable for both experienced athletes and first-time half marathon runners.

Entry Requirements

Those wishing to participate can apply through a ballot system that opens in January or register via a charity place. For 2025, the entry fee was set at £30, with a minimum fundraising target of £350. Participants are provided with various supports, including a race t-shirt, digital training plans, and baggage services on race day. There is a limited quota for international participants, and in line with environmental policies, mass ticket sales through tour operators have been discontinued.

Awards and Performances

Cash prizes are awarded to top athletes in the elite categories. The first-place prizes for both men and women are £1,000, with a total prize pool of £2,050 extending to the top ten finishers. Over the years, world-renowned athletes such as Haile Gebrselassie, Paula Radcliffe, Mary Keitany, and Eilish McColgan have participated in the event.

Course Records

The best performances recorded on the Royal Parks Half Marathon course are as follows:

  • Men’s Course Record: Haile Gebrselassie (Ethiopia) – 1:01:14 (2010, London – Hyde Park)
  • Women’s Course Record: Florence Kiplagat (Kenya) – 1:06:54 (2014, London – Hyde Park)

These records were achieved on the single-loop, relatively flat course starting and finishing in Hyde Park.

World Records

No world record has been set on the Royal Parks Half Marathon course to date. However, the current official half marathon world records are:

  • Men’s World Record: Jacob Kiplimo (Uganda) – 56:42 (February 16, 2025, Barcelona)
  • Women’s World Record: Letesenbet Gidey (Ethiopia) – 1:02:52 (October 24, 2021, Valencia)

Cultural Significance and Community Participation

The event functions as more than just a race, offering a festival-like atmosphere for Londoners and participants. The event village in Hyde Park features food and beverage areas, sponsor booths, and live music performances. Public transport is offered free of charge across the city on race day. Funds raised during the event support the conservation and management of the 5,000 acres of Royal Parks, promoting environmental sustainability.

Organization

The event is organized by The Royal Parks charity in collaboration with London Marathon Events. It is also distinguished by its sustainability initiatives; for instance, in 2024, measures were introduced after it was found that 90% of participants’ carbon footprints stemmed from international flights. Although the Royal Parks Half Marathon is not part of the SuperHalfs series, which includes Europe's most prestigious half marathons, it is organized with similar environmental responsibilities and international standards.
