Altınözü Cimemi is a registered traditional craft unique to the Altınözü district of Hatay Province, Türkiye. It involves weaving wheat stalks that are dyed with natural root dyes. Altınözü Cimemi was officially registered as a geographical indication by the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office in 2022. In the production process, stalks from locally cultivated long-stemmed Cumhuriyet and Karakılçık wheat varieties are used. This craft is transmitted from generation to generation as both a utilitarian kitchen craft and as a decorative art, and is currently promoted through training courses.
Production and Characteristics
The distinguishing feature of Altınözü Cimemi lies in its coiling technique and the use of natural root dyes that create various patterns. This craft dates back to the early years of the Turkish Republic and forms part of the cultural heritage within its defined geographical boundary. The products serve both functional purposes—such as bread baskets, fruit bowls, and snack trays—and as decorative items. The wheat stalks preferred by the local community are known for their durability and suitability for weaving.
Production Stages
Collection and Sorting of Wheat Stalks
During the harvest season in May–June, dry wheat stalks are collected and stored in dry, shaded areas. This step is crucial for preserving the durability of the stalks.
Dyeing Process
For dyeing, salted water is boiled in iron or copper cauldrons. Natural root dye is added and dissolved in the boiling water. The stalks are pressed with stones to ensure even dye absorption on both sides. Salt is added as a fixative. After dyeing, the stalks are dried in sunlight and stored in dark environments to preserve color.
Weaving Process
In weaving, long stalks are used for coiling, while short stalks serve as filler material. The stalks are softened by soaking them in hot or cold water. Starting from the center of the base, the coiling technique is applied, incorporating patterns such as the wheel of fortune, sun, or star motifs. The base typically consists of 8 to 10 rows. After shaping the body, the edge is finished, which can be straight, looped, or zigzagged.
Geographical Indication Registration and Inspection
Altınözü Cimemi was registered and protected as a mark of origin on November 11, 2022. The registering institution is Altınözü Municipality. All production stages must be carried out within the borders of the Altınözü district, Hatay Province.
Inspections are conducted at least once per year under the coordination of Altınözü Municipality by relevant institutions. These inspections check production methods, material compliance, and the correct use of the geographical indication emblem.
Cultural and Economic Contributions
Through courses organized by the Hatay Altınözü Olive Labor Women’s Cooperative (HAZEK), the Altınözü Cimemi craft is being transferred to new generations. Women both earn income through production and contribute to preserving traditional knowledge. Once limited to kitchenware, Altınözü Cimemi is now adapted into modern designs, including bags, baskets, and coasters. Thanks to a zero-waste production model, every part of the stalk is utilized.
Products made by course participants are sold both domestically and internationally, contributing to the local economy. The active involvement of young women ensures the sustainability of this cultural craft.
