Audio Campus

Sesli Kampüs is an accessible education-focused mobile application and project initiative developed to provide visually impaired university students with audio access to lecture notes and academic content. It is also Türkiye’s first “Academic Audio E-Library Project.”^【1】 The system aims to enable visually impaired students to access course materials by converting digital versions of lecture notes into audio format. Sesli Kampüs is described as a student-driven solution designed to reduce barriers to educational materials in higher education.

The Sesli Kampüs project has been granted support under the ÜNİDES Projects organized by the Ministry of Youth and Sports and has been implemented in collaboration with the Literature and Debate Club and the Education Support Accessibility Network Association (EDEA) at Bursa Technical University (BTÜ). The project is led by Saliha Polat and was officially launched by Prof. Dr. Barış Tamer Tonguç and Assoc. Dr. Melda Medine Sunay.^【2】

Under the project, volunteer students record lecture notes for visually impaired peers; these audio recordings are then made accessible through a mobile application. Audio recordings are produced either in person or online within a dedicated sound booth established at BTÜ Library and are subsequently verified for accuracy by the project team before being uploaded to the application. Visually impaired students can use these audio recordings to continue their studies. With contributions from students across Türkiye, the application also enables the audio recording of lecture notes from universities beyond BTÜ.

The process of converting lecture notes into audio format within Sesli Kampüs is carried out by volunteer university students. In the initial phase, volunteers receive diction training to prepare them for recording course materials, with the goal of enhancing the quality and intelligibility of the audio notes. Once recorded, the materials undergo quality control by the project team before being uploaded and made accessible via the mobile application. The application provides visually impaired students with on-demand access to academic content.

The primary objective of the project is to facilitate access to educational materials for visually impaired university students and to strengthen equity in education. Sesli Kampüs aims not to remain limited to BTÜ but to build an expanding academic audio content repository through the participation of volunteers from other universities. The project team plans to extend the network of audio academic content to universities across Türkiye, with the goal of including lecture notes from all academic departments within the application.

In addition to Bursa Technical University, the Sesli Kampüs project is supported by volunteers from Başkent University, Marmara University, Yıldız Technical University, and Bursa Uludağ University. The project is structured to welcome voluntary participation from university students throughout Türkiye. Lecture notes are recorded either through the mobile application or via audio recording rooms established on university campuses. Approximately 80 volunteer students are actively involved in the project, and participants are reported to be studying at universities across various regions of Türkiye.^【3】 This structure enables Sesli Kampüs to function as a nationwide academic audio e-library network built through broad-based participation.

Sesli Kampüs is not merely a technical tool for visually impaired students; it was conceived with the broader goal of promoting equality and accessibility in education. Feedback from visually impaired students highlights that the application has significantly eased access to lecture notes and supported their academic journey. The project also continues to serve as a social responsibility initiative that strengthens collaboration within university communities.
