Aydın artichoke is a variety of artichoke cultivated in Aydın Province, Türkiye, distinguished by its unique flavor. This artichoke is recognized both for its growing conditions and its gastronomic qualities. With its soft texture, delicate leaves and slightly sweet aroma, Aydın artichoke is frequently preferred for both fresh consumption and culinary use. Benefiting from the region’s climate and soil structure, this variety becomes larger and more flavorful. Additionally, Aydın Artichoke holds an important place in local cuisine and is commonly used in olive oil-based dishes, salads and stuffed preparations. Granted geographical indication status, Aydın Artichoke has become a product recognized not only regionally but also nationally.

Aydın is located in the fertile Büyük Menderes basin of the Aegean Region, an area that provides ideal conditions for artichoke cultivation due to its climate and soil composition. The region’s humid Mediterranean climate enables artichokes to undergo a long and healthy growth period.

Application and announcement process: The Aydın Chamber of Commerce submitted an application to the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office on 8 August 2023 under the name “Aydın Artichoke”; it was officially announced on 1 October 2024.

Registration: It gained official status on 10 January 2025 (Registration No 1688, geographical indication mark).

EU process: The application is being pursued with the aim of securing protection at both national and European Union levels.

Aydın artichoke is harvested by local producers in spring, during May and June. It is known for its large, compact and full heads. Among the main varieties, local strains developed through adaptation of “Globe” and “Green Globe” types stand out.

Production through cooperatives is supported by advanced agricultural techniques, hoeing and irrigation systems. The product is prepared for market through harmonized storage and cleaning processes.

Cooperative structure: The Aydın Artichoke Cooperative operates with approximately 40 members and achieves annual production of 2.5 to 3 million artichokes.

Farmer income: Artichoke has become an economically attractive and viable alternative crop for Aydın farmers; despite its lengthy production cycle, it generates steady income.

Branding: The geographical indication registration has enhanced product quality and visibility, strengthening its marketing capacity.

Aydın is among Türkiye’s key provinces in terms of the number of geographical indication products; alongside artichoke, it is known for chestnuts, olive oil and pine nuts. The European Union registration process aims to establish a stronger presence in international markets.

The geographical indication status of Aydın artichoke enhances its potential for agricultural development and gastro-tourism.

Marketing strategies: Promotion in the EU market is supported by the use of the geographical indication emblem.

Farmer welfare: Strengthening cooperatives is expected to stabilize farmer incomes.

Sustainability: Sustainable production is targeted through good agricultural practices and quality control mechanisms.
