Çınar (District)

Çınar is a district of Diyarbakır Province in the Southeastern Anatolia Region of Türkiye. The district covers an area of 1,934 km². According to 2023 data from the Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK), the population of the district is 76,966.

History

The historical roots of Çınar extend back to the Paleolithic Age. Zerzevan Kalesi, located within the district boundaries, dates from the Roman period and reflects the region’s historical identity. The name of the district also appears in Ottoman-era documents. In 1937 it had the status of a subdistrict (nahiye) and attained district status in 1953.

Geographical and Administrative Structure

Çınar district is located southeast of the city center of Diyarbakır. To the east lies Mardin Province, to the north the central districts of Diyarbakır, to the west Bismil, and to the southwest Kocaköy. The terrain is predominantly flat, and the district exhibits characteristics of a continental climate.

Administratively, Çınar consists of 101 neighborhoods in addition to the central town. The district has a subdistrict governorate (kaymakamlık) and a municipal administration.

Economy

Economic activities in the district are primarily based on agriculture and livestock farming. Wheat, barley and lentil production are the main agricultural outputs. Small-scale livestock farming is also widespread.

Cultural and Historical Heritage

Zerzevan Kalesi is an important archaeological site located within the boundaries of Çınar district. Dating from the Roman period, the fortress served as a military base and settlement. Within the fortress complex are structures such as a church, an observation tower, underground shelters and water cisterns. In addition, excavations conducted at the fortress in 2020 uncovered a subterranean Mithras temple.
