Elmadağ (District)

Elmadağ is a district located in Türkiye’s Central Anatolia Region and is administratively subordinate to Ankara. Situated approximately 40 kilometers from the city center of Ankara, Elmadağ lies to the east of the province. To its east is Kırıkkale, to the northeast is Kalecik, to the north is Akyurt, to the west are Mamak and Altındağ, and to the south is the district of Bala. With an area of approximately 570 km², Elmadağ is among the rural districts near Ankara due to its geographical structure and transportation accessibility.

History

Elmadağ and its surroundings have served as a home to many civilizations throughout history. Archaeological investigations in the region have revealed evidence of settlement dating back to antiquity. The district’s history spans from the Hittites through the Roman, Byzantine, Seljuk, and Ottoman periods. Due to its strategic location along ancient caravan routes, Elmadağ became an important component of Anatolia’s internal trade and transportation networks. In the early years of the Republic, Elmadağ functioned as a subdistrict center and gradually developed into a district.

The topography of the district is rugged and mountainous. High areas such as Elmadağ and İdris Dağı define its geographical structure, while valleys and plateaus have shaped settlement patterns and agricultural activity. Seasonal streams such as Kargalı Deresi flow through the region. These natural features contribute to the unique landscape diversity of the area.

A significant portion of the population is concentrated in the district center, while rural areas contain smaller, less densely populated settlements. Due to migration trends toward the city center and Ankara over time, the average age in rural areas has increased.

Economy

The economy of Elmadağ is primarily based on agriculture and animal husbandry. Major agricultural products include wheat, barley, chickpeas, and lentils, while fruit cultivation focuses on apples, pears, and grapes. Sheep and goat rearing are especially common in rural neighborhoods.

In recent years, growing interest in natural products has led to the emergence of beekeeping, homemade grape molasses, erişte pasta, tomato paste, and similar local products as contributors to the district’s economy. Small-scale family enterprises play a significant role in the production and sale of these goods.
