Haspet Castle

Haspet Castle is located within the boundaries of the Varto district of Muş Province in Türkiye’s Eastern Anatolia Region. It is situated approximately five kilometers east of the district center, atop a high hill. The castle occupies a commanding position over its surroundings and is accessible by road.

History

The exact date of the castle’s construction is unknown. According to an announcement by the Muş Provincial Directorate of Culture and Tourism of the Republic of Türkiye, features characteristic of the Urartian period have been identified at the site. It is believed that the structure was used by various civilizations throughout history.

Architectural Features

Haspet Castle was built upon natural rock formations. The construction employs local stone materials that are consistent with the region’s geological structure. Remnants of defensive walls are still visible in the surviving sections of the structure. Remains of towers designed for defense are also present. These ruins indicate that the castle served functional purposes during various historical periods.

Conservation and Tourism Status

Haspet Castle has been officially registered by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism among the immovable cultural heritage sites requiring protection. According to data from the Muş Provincial Directorate of Culture and Tourism of the Republic of Türkiye, the castle is considered part of the cultural heritage, and efforts are underway to preserve the historical integrity of its surrounding area. The castle is among the cultural sites in Muş Province that are open to visitors alongside other historical structures.
